Los Angeles’ nu-disco duo, Classixx, headlined The Red Bull Sound Select Tour that traveled through Arizona last weekend making three stops in Tucson, Phoenix, and Flagstaff. Offering free admission with an online RSVP, Red Bull’s Sound Select initiative celebrates local music by breaking down boundaries and working to bring artists and fans closer together on a national scale. Being an avid follower of Classixx’s contagiously groovy, Saturday-Night-Fever style, I eagerly RSVP’ed for the chance to party down with them for free.

Friday night the tour bus pulled up to Phoenix’s intimately hip Crescent Ballroom ready to fill the venue with ultra smooth, electro funk. From the lavish Red Bull sponsored cocktails to the charismatic crowd, Crescent’s homey ambience was amplified becoming the ideal venue for a night full of blissful, disco vibin’.

The night’s progression into a ruthless boogyfest began with a sequence of emerging electronic trio bands: Hustle and Drone, The Flavr Blue, and Superhumanoids. L.A.’s dream-pop new-wave band, Superhumanoids took the stage and effortlessly readied the anxious crowd for Classixx.

As Tyler Blake and Michael David, better known as Classixx, prepared their delightfully minimalistic stage setup, the anticipation in the room was amplified and the crowd’s growing energy became apparent. By the time their ultra-catchy “Is This How You Feel” Remix was finished playing, Classixx had every fan in the room captivated. Vivaciously implementing bouncy synths, soulful guitar riffs, and progressive basslines live, they sparked a dance party with the entire audience inherently gettin’ down.

Classixx brought their unmistakable fusion of 80’s synth pop with indie-rock to Phoenix causing the walls of the Crescent Ballroom to overflow with disco fever inspired house music. Looping through their catalogue of familiar and celebrated remixes combined with fresh originals, Classixx nostalgically enchants a vast array of audiences.

We were lucky enough to sit down with heavy-hitter, Dimitris “D-jahsta” Maragkoz, getting some insight into his style and past, along with his recent release with Megalodon, “Demon” on Never Say Die Records’ inaugural Black Label EP.

JNTM: What is your musical background/ When did you start producing?

D-jahsta: Since I was young, I’ve been attracted by Hip-Hop culture, especially RZA’s beats. I tried to produce my first Hip-Hop beats for many local rappers back in 2004. Then I started experimenting with various bpm and genres, some of them Drum ‘n’ Bass, Jungle kai Breakcore. In 2008 I listened to dubstep for the very first time. Without a second thought, I knew it. It was what I wanted to do from now on.

JNTM: How did you come up with your name?

D-jahsta:I used to save my first beats in a folder that I named “Disaster”, and it was full of untitled tracks. I don’t exactly remember where my alias came from. But, the sure thing is that D-Jahsta comes from Disaster.

JNTM: Who have some of your influences been?

D-jahsta:I really have a lot and several genres. I think my main influence on the songs I’ve made these latest years were Venetian snares, RZA, Datsik and Vaggelis.

JNTM: You’ve toured all over Europe and the US. What are some of the sickest places or shows that you’ve played?

D-jahsta: I really enjoyed many of my shows. Some of them are 50hz (Amsterdam), NextLevel (LA), Sub.Mission (Denver), JD4D (Perth) Splash Dubstep (Paris) JingleTheBass (STL) these are the first ones that come to mind.

JNTM: Where are you currently located, and how conducive has it been to your music production and progression?

D-jahsta: Presently, I am in Athens, Greece where my family lives, the studio that I make music and a very big group of people that support me and my music. I’ve got to mention that in the beginning, it was really hard to show and fit this kind of music out there. In other words 4 years ago my music career was limited in Greece.

These last years, eventually, EDM is now known to Athens too. A large group of fans, artists & event promoters of this music suddenly popped up, giving us a music experience, not far from what we see in the rest of Europe. My country supports me in a mentionable way, and that means a lot to me.

JNTM: You’ve released on Chronos Records, Firepower Records and have done a few mixes for Never Say Die Records, but this is your first release for NSD on the Black Label Volume 1 EP. How stoked are you on that?

D-jahsta: I’ve always been fan of NSD and Skism. Funny part back in 2010 when I first met Skism at an event, I kept asking him so many questions, like where can I senddemos and what does it take to make a release on Never Say Die, and he gave me an e-mail. I had no history or releases and I was afraid of just sending it, haha! Eventually, it happened and I am grateful that I have the possibility and the privilege of course to work for such an important label at this moment.

JNTM: How did you get hooked up with NSD records to begin with?

D-jahsta: Cory and I always wanted to jump on a track together but unfortunately this chance was never given. During my last US tour we eventually chilled together somewhere at Saint Louis where we made our beat “Demon”. We were both very excited about the result. Cory already had some releases there and he had a good connection with all of the NSD team so he sent the song. Things just started to roll!

JNTM: How did you like working with Megalodon, and do you guys have a previous relationship, or did NSD pair you two up specifically for the Black Label EP?

D-jahsta: Our sounds fit very well together, our ideas fit perfectly! As a conclusion, we work fast and with perfect flow. Besides, the key element of collaboration is the communication. We are used to that, constantly playing gigs all over the world, so we were in touch online. So, as I said we always wanted to jump on a track together but, unfortunately this chance was never given.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/139997580″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_artwork=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

JNTM: What’s next for the Black Label series?

D-jahsta: Vol. 2 soon featuring similar vibes, can’t reveal the artists yet though!

JNTM: What’s coming up with you in regard to production and shows?

D-Jahsta: I’m spending many hours every day working on sound design techniques trying to reach the ROBOSTEP sound that I work on. There is already work like my track with Rekoil, ‘The Devil’ that’s about to be released soon, unexpected colabs, a whole new D-Jahsta LP, shows in Europe and Australia and also a big tour in America around the end of the year.

Drawing from influences like Datsik and other bass heads, D-jahsta packs power in every drop as is heard in his gnarly track “Demon” while bringing his own eerie style to the table.

Truly pushing the envelope of what is heavy with his ROBOSTEP sound, D-Jahsta’s rise shows that passion, hard work and surrounding yourself with the right type of people goes a long way. We’re stoked to see where he lands in his US tour, so be on the lookout for some bass crushing power whipping through your town, and stay up on all of his new releases!

As the summer festival season comes to a close, Outside Lands happened unlike any ordinary festival under the sun. San Francisco’s summers are as crazy as its winters as any local will tell you.

While some festival goers tend to love their fair share of flower crowns and high-waisted shorts, Outside Landers found themselves bundled in their winter beanies and knitted sweaters as they’d frolic about in the magical fog invested forest of Golden Gate Park. In other words, this festival was less about the festival fashion and more about the music. PHEW! (But, don’t get me wrong San Francisco has some of the best street style out there.)

However, there are certain things to expect judging from previous years, as this was the 7th annual Outside Lands Music Festival. Vendors from all over San Fran supply delicious treats and alcoholic beverages to keep tummies satisfied.

There usually will be a dad rock n roll band or two headlining, but also a few electronic power house DJs to keep those rave kids satisfied, and of course people will find new and improved smuggling tactics to get through security with their illicit substances. As everyone fell through the rabbit hole during the opening day, there were many surprises that were soon to become a reality on the other side.

Outside Lands Day One:

The first day was set off with a bang when the electro-funk duo Chromeo gave the crowd something to groove about at the Lands End Stage (main stage). I’m not the biggest fan of Chromeo, but I found myself shaking it. They gave off an 80’s funk style with their talk-box synths and slicked back hair.

But quite honestly, I could not keep the other booming dynamic duo Disclosure out of the back of my head. They have blown up this past year and were on my must see list ever since their album Settle came out in 2013…in my world, every song on Settle is a hit.

Disclosure opened their set with “F For You” and immediately everyone was in a deep house/disco trance. One of the members, Howard, was getting funky on some live percussion while his brother Guy was on the turntables. They played hits such as “Situation”, “Confess To Me”, and “When a Fire Starts To Burn”. The sun set behind their stage and the fog started to roll in setting the scene for a mystical dance floor when they played “Help Me Loose My Mind”.

Day one was coming to a quick close because of the strict 10 pm sound curfews that were in full force every night. Kanye West and Arctic Monkeys were the headliners that wrapped up the first day of stimulating chaos.

Arctic Monkeys played at the Twin Peaks stage which was about a 20 minute walk from the main stage so after seeing a tad of Kanye West we started our journey to catch some swaggering indie rock and danceable neo-punk.

Outfitted in his trademark grease lighting hair and leather jacket, Alex Turner led the Monkeys in some oldies, “I Bet You Look Good on the Dance Floor” and “Old Yellow Bricks” which were definitely the recipe for a mosh pit party and boy was it.

They also played a ton of new hits from their newest Album AM which were a little more pop and a little less garage rock. Arctic Monkeys undoubtedly drew a smaller, but far more appreciative crowd than Kanye. True Arctic Monkeys fans got a ton of dancing room that night!

Outside Lands Day Two:

The sea of people was even more overwhelming the second day and maybe that was because the lineup was even more stellar than the first. The indie rockers Local Natives were our first to see at the Lands End stage. They create their own sound with tight, intense percussion, clean guitar melodies, and vocal harmonies that can easily woo any crowd. This being the 3rd time I’ve seen the Local Natives, I knew they would put on a magical show and it lived up to my expectations.

Then there was Haim. Let me tell you these girls are extremely bad ass! The crowd seemed to agree with me too. Although their songs are very catchy and pop-based, the lead singer/guitarist Danielle Haim would gift the crowd with rock n roll riff relief when she would shred her cherry red Gibson SG. Danielle could be the equivalent of a female Jimi Hendrix and she definitely left me awe struck.

At this point in the day, if you had disco fever, you were at the Duck Sauce set at the Twin Peaks stage. Duck Sauce is a two-man saucy combo, A-Trak and Armand Van Helden. They are responsible for party anthems such as “Barbara Streisand” and “NRG” in which they threw into their set.

Duck Sauce is bringing disco back in the sexiest EDM way. The goofy duo engages the crowd by cooling them down with squirt guns and throwing out duck bills for people to wear. They hit the ground running with “aNYway” as the inflatable two-story duck behind the boys almost started to get its boogie on too. Duck Sauce definitely set the tone for the rest of the festival.

Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers closed day two at Lands End. Although, I’ve only listened to a hit or two by the group I still had such a euphoric feeling when I saw them live. I felt as if I time travelled back to the smoky Palo Alto bars in 1979 where these songs were played first. But the mass amount of people felt like a sold out stadium.

Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers proved that they still got that rock n roll soul and they stole my heart that night. They closed their set with “American Girl” which sent everyone on a twirling rampage.

Outside Lands Day Three:

We woke up on day three with one thing on our mind…Flume! Flume was first for us and we could not be more stoked. As we walked through the entrance we noticed how everyone in the venue was swarming to the Twin Peaks stage, where coincidentally Flume was melting faces with his house and U.K. garage beats.

We were literally packed like sardines for his set and it felt like the whole Outside Lands population was there. Flume started with “Insane” and that was the moment the crowd reached “raising the roof” party mode with no concern of looking insane…just continued dancing.

He threw down the bangers such as “Holdin On”, “You & Me (Flume Remix)”, “Lorde-Tennis Court (Flume Remix)”, and “Tell Me – RL Grime x What So Not”. The climax of his set consisted of What So Not’s track “Touched” and there literally was not a still soul for that song. Talk about twerk city. Flume’s set was freaking ratchet…hands down best set of the weekend.

As the festival started wrapping up, Spoon put on a considerably good performance getting the main stage warmed up for the big names to come: The Flaming Lips and The Killers.

The Flaming Lips were flaming with psychedelic style. As I looked at the lead singer Wayne Coyne with his costume filled with metallic silver glitter stencils, which matched his hair…I got to a point where I wish we were related. He looked like a fairy up on stage with his face brushed with colorful paint. Surrounding him were people in inflatable costumes from mushrooms to rainbows. Coyne crowd surfed in his human hamster ball while giving the audience an over the top serenade.

Coming to the close of the third day I was filled with nostalgia because I was about to see The Killers whom I’ve been a dear fan of since their first album Hot Fuss was released. As I waited there filled with anticipation, I watched Brandon Flowers and the rest of the band come onto the stage and as the camera zoomed onto Brandon Flowers face and you could see his pupils dilate with awe and excitement because of the overwhelming aura of the crowd.

Flowers gasped, paused and the melody of “Mr. Brightside” started to ring throughout the venue and everyone went wild. They played hit after hit such as “When You Were Young”, “Jenny Was a Friend of Mine”, “Spaceman”, “Human”, “Read My Mind” and “Smile Like You Mean It”. They were a perfect closing for such a diverse music festival. They too were one of the biggest highlights of the weekend.

Outside Lands Music Festival undoubtedly had it all…music, food, wine, beer, art. Those are five of my favorite things if I do say so myself. What more can you want? Talk about recapturing the flower power in San Francisco.

Recently departing from their killer set at Ultra Music Festival, the rapidly rising duo have released an astonishing remix of Foxes’s original, “Holding On To Heaven“. You may instantly recognize the talented British singers vocals widely known for Zedd’s double platinum single, “Clarity” or Adventure Club’s remix of her “Youth” single. With her stunning vocals largely intact, this Chainsmokers remix features a progressive house vibe fit for any big-room drop. As per usual, the New-York based duo has left us insights on this very latest track. With no set release date in sight (other than release in UK May 4th), stream below until additional updates arrive. Enjoy!

The Thing about Foxes is we Love her… Her vocals are beautiful and effortless and carry such a nice emotional sense of gravity. Its why we think her vocals always do so well with dance music. Holding onto Heaven was definitely a fun challenge for us to remix. The original is very far from a dance track and we wanted to think out of the box and do something unusual with the vocal. Additionally there were so many cinematic parts to the song to use particularly the string. In our remix you will here some vocal transposing that we think adds this very strange but unique edge that cuts through. That paired with our melody and the strong we think we came out with a very dynamic song thats in a constant flux of feeling.

After not hearing much since the release of his last album, Take You Down, six months back, Bassnectar wholeheartedly reaches out to his fans, sharing some insight into his recent activities. Loren says it best:

” Last fall, while zooming around on tour, I set out to write an album which would really represent my diverse tastes in music. I approached it with a specific and dynamic palette of influences, ideas, preferences, and styles. Sometimes when I hear requests for my “older material” (from someone who only discovered my music relatively recently) or when I hear a comment about a song being “too trap” (as if 808 drums are no longer allowed in music! …when 808 beats have been a part of my production since…1996? 1997?), I think about how far back my musical influences stretch… how multidimensional they are.

I wanted to reach back into all the various corners of those influences (death metal & grindcore… gangster rap… classical… psychedelic rock… techno/ambient… IDM/glitch… downtempo… trip-hop… breakbeat… trance… every vein of electronic music… folk music… big band… jazz…. acid jazz… mushroom jazz… etc etc etc) and I wanted to play the field, like a human pinball bouncing off all the extreme ends and complicated dimensions of my own musical tastes. I wanted to create an album full of music I love. I wanted to have fun, play games, tell jokes. I wanted to make insane bangers, and also to explore deep sonic journeys… and everything in between.

By the end of Summer 2013 I had more than enough music to complete an album, but the songs weren’t really finished. Some of them were crude ideas, and a one in particular was a little track I began in 2002 and never got around to finishing. I decided I wanted to reach out to collaborators (not just other producers, but singer-songwriters, guitarists, pianists, composers, vocalists of all sorts, even entire live bands) and get interactive. By October I had rewritten many songs into a unique format: no drums. no bass. I reduced all the wobbles and lasers and synths and sound FX into basic chords: piano, guitar… maybe some simple background accompaniment. I sent them out to all kinds of people, mostly vocalists or composers, and asked them to write to it, riff over it, mash it up… see what came back. By the end of Fall Tour, I had almost enough music for an entire album that sounded like some weird indie rock band… still no beats, and no bass. I spent the rest of the year recording new ideas, sitting with vocalists and writing lyrics… playing guitar and piano and constantly remixing and transforming the ideas… just trying to see what would come up.

In January I started taking these songs and “remixing” them, as if they were songs by some other band, and I was hired to do a remix. I treated them like an Ellie Goulding song, or a Deftones song… I ripped them apart, cut them up beyond recognition, and added tons of weight, heaviness, filth, noise, beats, basslines, sound effects etc, often winding up with multiple versions of each song. On almost every individual song, I would act like some manic Goldilocks character – alternating back and forth between the extremes “this song is too hot, this song is too cold” trying to get everything “just right”.

Being off the road is weird. I’ve never had a 6 month break before… not since I was in college and throwing nonstop full moon parties and renegade warehouse raves, and trying to save the world

I’ve spent a lot of time hiking and enjoying nature, reconnecting with my friends, being invisible and relaxed… but most of my time has been spent working obsessively. I’ve worked a 13+ hour shift, 7 days a week, almost every single day this year. And I’ve collaborated with so many people that many days are spent with 5 computers in front of me, on the phone with New York, with Atlanta, with Chicago, with Denver, with Los Angeles ….losing my mind and losing myself in music.

Now I need to decide: what the fuck am I gonna do, how do I ‘finish’ this story… 26 tracks… gotta pick 13… gotta choose which ones make the cut, and which order they will appear in… don’t wanna leave anything out, don’t wanna under-represent any particular direction… want to make something that feels just right… mostly, I just want to make something I love. And share it with you later this year!

I’m sure I will get a single or two out soon, ideally before the summer… but it’s hard to release one slice of the cake when each slice is so different and unique…

Oddly, as much as I look forward to delighting you with this, I don’t care if you don’t like it. Or if you wish it was more like this, or less like that, or not enough this, or too much that. I don’t care!
I’m making what I love, and I feel so grateful when I look ahead at all the amazing opportunities I will get this year to play these songs – and remix them and reinvent them – at live shows…

One of the best parts about this time off the road is being disconnected from the internet… not checking Twitter or Facebook. I kept feeling the reflex to check in, say hi, etc… but it’s just simply too deliciously fucking wonderful to not be plugged in. I have a personal goal of spending as little time as possible online this year…. ha, we will see how it goes (wish me luck).

But I’ll be seeing you all soon out on the road, just wanted to give you a little update on where my mind is, and what I’ve been up to.

Hope you are healthy and happy,”

Lorin

As Bassnectar continues to fine tune his eagerly-awaited album release sometime this year, bassheads alike will be happy to know that Lorin is still doing his thing, pushing the envelope as always.

If there were ever an artist to put the ‘deep’ in deep house, it’s Trikk. Best known for his remixes and redubs for various house artists, Trikk has released his newest project — a remix for Waze & Odyssey’s “Real Good Like.”

Staying true to their classic style, Waze & Odyseey are releasing this single on vinyl only via their W&O Street Tracks label.

Waze & Odyssey – Real Good Like (Trikk Re-Dub)

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/137690087″ params=”auto_play=false&hide_related=false&visual=true” width=”100%” height=”450″ iframe=”true” /]

Purchase Real Good Like (Trikk Re-Dub) on vinyl right here.

Trikk’s remix takes the happy, disco-friendly original and turns it into a dark, buzzing track that would be perfect for a pulsing warehouse rave. Like some of his other work, the “Real Good Like” remix is a short and sweet collaboration of hissing noise, percussion, and deep, distorted womps.

In this new year, we are already seeing artists push the envelope in fresh, new, cutting-edge ways. Delivering innovative spins left and right, and blurring the genre lines with a creative disregard for the rules, we are beginning to see more artists change the typical conventions. Dance music is evolving quickly as sounds intersect in novel ways, and FIGHT CLVB is proving that genre is a term of the past with the release of their latest; a thumping rework of Major Lazer’s “Aerosol Can.”

We are proud to premiere FIGHT CLVB’s newest selection as they come through with a thundering club-primed edit of Major Lazer’s single from their forthcoming Apocalypse Soon EP, slated to be released via Mad Decent later this month. FIGHT CLVB take the original track and flip it upside down, as they bend Major Lazer’s signature dance hall sound into a pumping bass selection, perfect for the club atmosphere.

Major Lazer- Aerosol Can (FIGHT CLVB Club Edit)

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/133676745″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_artwork=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

Download Major Lazer- Aerosol Can (FIGHT CLVB Club Edit) for free right here.

Modifying the original with a pounding drum arrangement during the intro that carries through the entire remix, FIGHT CLVB’s edit warps Pharrell’s vocal work into precise chops and loops, accentuated by the obvious addition of some serious sub treatment. Fusing the original’s reggae/ dance hall elements with the club aesthetic, “Aerosol Can” is energized with a completely unique vibe that is meant to turn club dance floors into jam-packed party saunas.

Best of all, FIGHT CLVB is giving their “Aerosol Can” edit away as a free download. Check out the stream below, and be sure to download this sure-to-be club rattler.

Grammy nominated producer/DJ Duke Dumont has been having one hell of year, producing originals and remixes left and right — all of which getting high praise from critics across the world.

One of the best things about good producers is that sometimes they have even better friends. In this case, I’ve been introduced to Hamburg native Tensnake who has released his remix for “I Got U” featuring Jax Jones.

Duke Dumont feat. Jax Jones – I Got U (Tensnake Remix)

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/135483537″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_artwork=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

The remix gives the already deep track an even deeper umph making it a sure-fire hit for the upcoming summer festival season.
