A friend sent me this compilation with the message, “Dude”. I checked out the track list and realized I didn’t recognize a single name on it. I thought I’d give it a try and listened to the opening track by Wantigga titled “Like That.”

This chilled out love trap tune absolutely kills it and like that (get it!) I was hooked. The Dutch was released by Los Angeles based label Huh What & Where Recordings who teamed up with Wantigga and Koen to craft a compilation of the best underground Dutch musicians.
It’s hard to truly place each of these songs into a particular genre but here goes nothing. The compilation is split into two separate styles. The first I will describe as chilled out love trap, the hardest of these tunes would have to be the aforementioned “Like That” but other stand outs include BoeBoe’s “Drift” and Ramik‘s “Trout Man Brown”

The second style, I will describe as frenetic future funk? I’m not really sure what to call it but I can tell you it’s some of the most interesting shit I’ve heard in a while. This includes Vinyl Frontier’s “Freak”, Nangdo’s “Talk 2 Me”, and Train Kayhatu’s “Boy Band.”

My favorite track on the compilation goes to Moods for his funky jam, “Rain Showers” which features understated vocal samples, feathery synths, and wah-wah guitar sample. All-in-all this compilation is triumph of emerging styles.
I would keep an eye out for all of these artists who seem to have fostered a cult of innovation in the Netherlands. A couple months ago we posted that Australia will be the next country churning out innovative new artists, now I think they’ve got a run for their money.
