In the last few years, we’ve seen dance music finally emerge into the world of commercialization as some of dance music’s most in-demand names begin to pull in Grammy nominations. Skrillex, Afrojack, and Zedd are all past Grammy winners, and now Aphex Twin can join those ranks, with this year’s awarded Best Dance/ Electronic Album. The reclusive English producer, who many consider one of the most influential figures in dance music’s modern era went up against deadmau5‘s critically acclaimed double album, While (1<2) to take this year’s top prize.

Aphex Twin’s cryptic release of Syro in 2014 brought the renown producer back to the limelight, setting the bar extremely high for full-length electronic LPs to follow. While Mat Zo, Royksopp & Robyn, and Little Dragon were also nominated for the award this year, it ultimately came down to two clear front-runners in that category, although Aphex Twin is also joined by the legendary Tiesto and Clean Bandit, who also won Grammys at this year’s event too.

The HARD Day of the Dead 2014 lineup has officially been announced — not even four weeks after HARD Summer 2014.  With almost no time to recuperate, folks around the country are already getting geared up and ready to go for another HARD Presents… event.

As with any lineup announcement, this year’s DOTD is full of surprises. One of the biggest surprise with this lineup is the b2b set with Deadmau5 and Eric Prydz. Although the two first made history earlier this year in Miami with a b2b set at a Miami Music Week club show, the two have yet to perform together in such a huge setting.

Another unexpected treat for this year’s DOTD is the return of Knife Party. As far as HARD events goes, we haven’t seen these two since the very first Day of the Dead (after the name was changed from Hard Haunted Mansion). With multiple “leaks” from their upcoming album, Knife Party’s return to the DOTD stage is going to be one for the books.

One of the biggest surprises for Day of the Dead 2014 is the change in venue. As HARD continues to grow with every year, it requires a bigger venue in order to contain the thousands upon thousands of Los Angeles party-goers.

This year’s DOTD will actually be moving away from the Los Angeles area into Ponoma area where the Los Angeles Fair Grounds (Fairplex) are held. Whether or not this was a last-minute change because of complaints from Whittier Park or if this was something Gary Richards had in mind all along, it seems as though the venue will be large enough to hold this year’s HARD goers and then some.

For quite some time now, the internet has been buzzing with rumors of deadmau5 releasing a new album that will blow all of his previous work out of the water. Well, now it’s official. The mau5 has recently announced he’ll be releasing a DOUBLE album (25 tracks — wtf!?) entitled, while(1<2). 

Joel has been calling this album the one he “feels to truly be [my] first proper body of work,” which gives fans a LOT to look forward to. The album will most likely be a collection of songs/previews fans have been able hear on deadmau5′ SoundCloud along with some completely new material:

It’s a good mix of shit I want to do versus shit people want to hear or what they would expect. It’s a good balance. It’s not like, ‘oh, it’s such a departure. He’s doing smooth jazz.’ It was when I was working on some live stuff, setlists for shows and stuff like that, and it just must have been a couple of tracks that sounded pretty good stitched together end to start and I thought, ‘well if I ever do an album or comiile this into some kind of album this has got to be that part of the order for that,’ and I just kind of took everything and played musical Tetris with it.

while(1<2) is set for digital release on June 17th and physical/streaming release on June 24th. You can listen to the album’s opening track “Avaritia,” right here.

While we’re still waiting for an actual announcement or confirmation, it seems as though this would be a perfect fit. The mau5 is already in Miami celebrating MMW and would be the only person available to fill the monsterous shoes Avicii has when it comes to this kind of show.

Would Joel play with the cube? Or just a totally unplugged DJ set, unrehearsed like he did with Prydz the other night in Miami?

UPDATE: Looks like this is actually happening! Mau5 heads, rejoice. Joel will definitely be playing UMF 2014!

Granted the Wildstylez version has a different break, the chords in the introduction are EXTREMELY similar and extremely noticeable to fans that only know some of Joel’s work.

I’m going to have to side with Deadmau5 on this one. I think that even if Wildstylez was going for the “Boogie 2nite” feel, he would have stopped himself after writing the intro synth line and thought, “hey, this sounds familiar.”

My guess is that the mau5 won’t press charges or anything like that, but instead will lash out via the internet. We’ll most likely hear some sort of song released within the next couple of hours or days that will poke fun at Wildstylez. Heck, I’d even bet that Deadmau5 tries to make the original “Some Chords” into a Hardstyle track himself.

In a study published in the journal of Neuroscience of Behavior and Physiology, it was found that a person’s ability to recognize images, letters, and numbers was faster when rock or classical music was playing in the background compared to when there was no music.

A similar effect was noted when workers on an assembly line listened to music. The workers who listened to music were more happy and efficient and made fewer errors.

So whatever type of music you like, as long as you’re listening to something, you’ll enjoy repetitive or boring tasks more and get them done faster.

It’s the whole “whistle while you work” mentality and I’ve used it at work and at home. I’ve decided to put together a list of the best mixes to listen to while you work. Some are old, some new. Some aren’t even mixes, they’re entire albums! Enjoy.

1. Claude VonStroke – VONSTROKE 2013 ESSENTIAL MIX – UNCUT & NO RADIO TAGS!

By far and away my favorite Deadmau5 album, Random Album Title is another four-on-the-floor heavy album that plays like a continuous mix — as long as you don’t have it on shuffle (who does that anyway?).

This mix is perfect for: studying for a final or reading a book.

3. Wolfgang Gartner – Live at The Palladium

At the beginning of this year, almost a month ago at this point, Deadmau5 went on yet another Twitter/Instagram rant, complaining about the people in attendance at his show at Mansion in Miami and proclaiming that he would never play in Miami again.

Well, it looks as though the mau5 will indeed be bringing his talents BACK to South Beach, as Space in Miami has offered to arrange a free show. Here’s an open letter from the club to Joel:

Dear Joel deadmau5

We read with great interest about your recent show in Miami, and your concerns about fans being placed in the back of the venue while trust fund kids paid premium prices to be placed in front of the DJ booth…

We would like to extend an invitation for you to make these fans happy by hosting a free show for them at our legendary venue, Space. We will extend complimentary admission to all your fans and they will be able to enjoy your music on our huge dance floor without trust fund kids or anything else between you and them.
