Simon James and Dan Hastle of Woolfy showcase their chilled out reggae inspired vocals in their new EP City Lights, released via Future Classic. Mixing an acoustic guitar with soulful synth arrangements, the duo create a laid back “beachy” vibe bringing the listener right to California, the birthplace of Woolfy’s distinct relaxed sound.

“Split Secs” grips the listener with charming ukelele chords and charming vocals in the beginning and moves into a mix of deep synth work and pop. “17” showcases their instrumental work paired with warm sonic waves.

The tune is a vibe-setting, bouncy cut that is dripping wet with bubbly synths and mellow bass-lines layered throughout.  JB’s latest tasty treat incorporates an ultra-catchy hook that will surely continue to bounce around in your head, after one quick listen.  The video, premiered via Thump features everyone from Skrillex to veterans like Skream and Benga. Nadastrom’s Dave Nada, bass-maestro AC Slater, as well as Dirty Bird‘s Justin Martin all lend a hand too, featured in some candid footage of the modern-day rock star life. Appearances by BBC taste-maker Annie Mac, Flux Pavillion, and Mad Decent‘s mad scientist Diplo, all help make for an enticing music video as well.

Jack Beats gives us a quick glimpse of what life behind the decks is like with the official video for “Beatbox.” Quickly hopping between frames, the viewer is taken from packed clubs to festival tents, on the road, and into green rooms with this fresh, immersive new video.

Thomas White is featured on the EP with a remix of the track Thick Gurlz.

White’s most recent effort comes in the form of Ariose which is being released through Paradisiaca Records based in the Netherlands. The EP borrows from the Dutch beat scene that we have seen in artists like Wantigga and Moods.

The record opens with the laid back Au Ciel which features a screaming synth layered over what I can only describe as chopped static. The title, and arguably best, track  Ariose utilizes a feathery vocal sample as it’s locus before evolving into a funky off-rhythm dance tune perfect for the beginning of a future-house mix.

Remixes with RAW label mates Dear Lola and Seapoint leave a little to be desired. Don’t get me wrong, I am actually a big fan of both artists but in this case the parts are greater than the sum. There is a good “festival trap” type moment at the end of the Dear Lola collab.

The EP closes with a remix of Ariose which brings new energy to the laid back track. Taste Tester add’s his signature sound creating a nice little juke rework.

In preparation of their release of Apocalypse Soon, Major Lazer has released their latest track with none other than Sean Paul. The new EP has a list of surprise guests including Pharell Williams, Machel Montano, Mr. Fox, and more.

To be completely honest, I don’t hate this song as much as I thought I would when I saw that Sean Paul was involved. If anything, he improves the song’s Dance Hall vibes with his weird yet distinct Jamaican vocals.

This is the kind of music Paul should have been making, or at least should start making now.

Apocalypse Soon is shaping up to be a pretty sick EP from Major Lazer, who has been going through some interesting transitioning over the past couple of years. It seems that now, however, the trio of ML (consisting of Diplo, Jillionaire, and Walshy Fire) has tightened up their production styles and are on their way to making huge waves yet again.
