Sure Marvin Gaye, Luther Vandross, and D’Angelo are great for getting down to business but you’re a future-conscious love maker and you want your booty music to reflect that. So I have decided to start making a semi-regular mix for America’s favorite past time, two Fridays a month.

I have compiled a playlist of my favorite R n’ B inspired future tracks from  the past year so you can do the dirty in style.

The playlist starts off with a remix of PARTYNEXTDOOR‘s Persian Rugs from M|M, complete with squeaky bed sounds. Next, we turn to our Australian brethren Chet Faker and Hayden James. 

Netherlands’ Cazz Major follows up with a Miguel remix that has gone wildly under appreciated.  Then we move on to some good old fashion R n’ B  with a Layzie edit of Raheem Devaughn‘s “Woman.”

The rest of the mix includes Ryan Hemsworth, Shintaro Sakamoto (Mayer Hawthorne Cover), and M!NT, with Bondax‘s Fire closing everything up.

On our second episode of Just A Mix… we’re beyond stoked to have New Orleans’ DXXXY. One of the best up-and-coming acts we’ve had the pleasure of catching live, DXXXY blew us away at BUKU 2014 and jumped at the chance to do an exclusive mix for us.

Earlier this month we had an interview with DXXXY and found out the dude has talents much deeper than just mixing and producing. We also did some digging and listened to some more of his live sets and discovered the range he has behind the decks.

If you’re ever in NO, make time out of your trip to catch one of his sets. It will be well worth your time to catch an artist that will be making some big moves within the next few years. Just you watch.

Here we are again. Wednesday. That teasing little bitch. I woke up late on this Wednesday, as I do on most Wednesdays. To be honest, I wake up late on most days. As long as I’m being honest, I have no idea what I’m writing this for. I’m just trying to take up a little word count because my job requires that I write about things that are of absolutely no interest to me. Would you like to know what does interest me?

Basketball. Pizza that’s too hot for me to eat. Women that are way too hot for me to eat. Video games. Writing. Comedy. Booze. The color purple. True Detective.

But most of all, I love the weekend.

We’re a little more than halfway to the weekend. So close, yet so far. How will we make it? What will calm our restless souls until our fair-haired maiden Friday makes her arrival? We’ll listen to music. AWESOME music. God, this is so lame.

This week’s playlist is an exciting one. We’ve got lots of trap, as per usual. There’s some tasty-ass house music, a little bit of hip hop, a little bit of pop and even some chopped and screwed Kanye. There’s also a track in here that’s 9 months old (Cherry Pepsi) but I liked it so much that I had to include it.

Slo White’s associative skills are also ridiculous, transitioning from topic to topic without skipping a beat, as heard in the verse, “It’s exciting when I’m writing, bongs and blunts I’m always lighting. Peter picked the pepper for his girlfriend, who I’m piping.”

With the clean, laidback beat and on-point vocals, you’ll have this track on repeat, finding a new and most likely ridiculous line each time through.

Another good friend and no stranger to JNTM, Hiperact, utilized his artistic license to turn Slo White’s track into a banger, while staying true to the hip-hop feel. Starting it off with some heavy and ominous bass swells, followed by a solid beat and some refined reverb, huge wobbly synths lead to the buildup before the wonky-ass drop, which is full of sweeping and piercing synths; quintessential Hiperact.

One thing that I always respect in a remix is a good amount of the original lyrics, and Hiperact does just that, paying homage to the homie’s lyrical prowess.

In a study published in the journal of Neuroscience of Behavior and Physiology, it was found that a person’s ability to recognize images, letters, and numbers was faster when rock or classical music was playing in the background compared to when there was no music.

A similar effect was noted when workers on an assembly line listened to music. The workers who listened to music were more happy and efficient and made fewer errors.

So whatever type of music you like, as long as you’re listening to something, you’ll enjoy repetitive or boring tasks more and get them done faster.

It’s the whole “whistle while you work” mentality and I’ve used it at work and at home. I’ve decided to put together a list of the best mixes to listen to while you work. Some are old, some new. Some aren’t even mixes, they’re entire albums! Enjoy.

2.  Deadmau5 – Random Album Title

By far and away my favorite Deadmau5 album, Random Album Title is another four-on-the-floor heavy album that plays like a continuous mix — as long as you don’t have it on shuffle (who does that anyway?).

This mix is perfect for: studying for a final or reading a book.

3. Wolfgang Gartner – Live at The Palladium

Wolfgang has always been and will always be one of my favorite producers and live performers, and whenever I’m missing the ol’ guy I’ll throw this mix on. It might be a little old but the set is timeless in my mind.

We here at JNTM are beyond excited to introduce a new series called Just A Mix… which will feature some of the best young talent from across the world. Every month we’ll spotlight a different producer who is on their way to becoming the next big thing.

The first installment of Just A Mix… features one of the hardest working up-and-comers I’ve ever had the pleasure of communicating with, Shintaro Yasuda. I was first introduced to Shintaro by our JNTM homie, BRAZZABELLE, who has been working closely with Shintaro. I got a chance to ask Shintaro some questions in addition to getting the inaugural installment of Just A Mix…

JNTM: Who was the first electronic artist that you listened to that made you want to start producing/DJing? Who still inspires you to this day?

Shintaro Yasuda: There were three songs that I remember that made me want to start producing electronic music. Chuckie’s “Let the Bass Kick” which I heard for the first time at my high school prom haha. It blew my mind.

The other two were Laidback Luke and Steve Angello’s remake of “Show Me Love” and Steve Aoki’s “Warp 1.9”

All of these producers still inspire me today because they’ve all been successful and have created their own signature sound, while still evolving with the progression and style changes of today’s music.

JNTM: Give us some background on yourself and your history working in music.

SY: I started at the age of 3 as a classically and jazz trained pianist in Miami. My career was focused on piano performance up until a few years ago. I’ve played in many bands, orchestras, solo performances, and as a studio musician.

I’ve picked up on a few instruments including guitar, bass, drums, saxophone, and clarinet. I then moved to LA where I attended school for audio engineering.

JNTM: What do you think the hardest thing is about getting started/getting your name out there, etc?

SY: Everything! Being able to stand out of the crowd can definitely be a challenge among the sea of producers and DJs especially when you’re trying to get your first few tracks heard.

JNTM: Do you think collaboration is a big part of getting your foot in the door? Why or why not?

SY: Absolutely. I found a lot of my growth as a producer was from being able to sit in a room with another producer and work on a track.

It’s always refreshing to learn and see how another individual’s approach to creating or editing can teach you to look at things differently and you can always pick up on a couple tips and tricks. It’s also more fun to be sitting in a studio with someone than being alone for 12 hours haha.

JNTM: What’s one of the biggest moments you had in 2013? What do you look forward to in 2014?

SY: Definitely opening up my own studio out here in LA was one the best things of 2013. Also meeting and getting a ton of feedback and support from producers and DJs I admire has been amazing!

2014 will be a busy year and I’m looking forward to be releasing a bunch of tracks and coming to a city near you! I also look forward to just be growing as a musician, producer, and person.

JNTM: Who are some of your favorite artists right now? EDM or not.

SY: Some of my favorite EDM artists that I’m really into right now are Brazzabelle, GTA, Wiwek, D.O.D, Juyen Sebulba, Laidback Luke, Autoerotique, Steve Aoki and Nervo. Some non EDM artists that I’m really into are Jojo, Leah Labelle, Tori Kelly, and Nikki Yanofsky.

I’ve been nostalgic lately so I’ve been listening to 90s/2000s Pop and Hip-hop.

JNTM: The EDM culture as a whole has been growing exponentially over the past few years — what are your thoughts on that? Do you think it’s a good thing or potentially a bad thing?

SY: I think it’s amazing. It’s great to see music I enjoy creating and listen to grow and become more popular by the day in all parts of the world.

JNTM: What’s one of the most embarrassing things to have happened to you on stage? How did you recover?

SY: Being as clumsy as I am, I remember playing keys in a gig once and spilled a drink all over my gear and had to stop in the middle of playing to switch out a keyboard haha.

JNTM: What do your parents think of you being a producer/DJ? Are they caught up on the culture and do they understand/support what you’re doing?

SY: My parents have always supported me since the day I picked up an instrument. My dad’s an old fashioned Japanese father so I don’t think he understands the culture but he’s always supported me in everything I do as long as I’m putting in the right work ethic.

JNTM: If you could have any other profession other than producing/djing what would it be and why?

That’s a tough one because all I’ve ever known was music but I did play paintball at a pro level for a while so maybe that. I also like arguing so maybe a lawyer haha!
