As if Brillz wasn’t already having one of the biggest years of his life, he and recent OWSLA addition Snails are gearing up for one hell of a tour. The Twonkoholics Tour 2014 has over 20 stops across the country hitting cities like Seattle, New York and even Atlanta for a special performance at TomorrowWorld.

This tour is huge for multiple reasons, the first being that this is Brillz’ second headlining tour in the past year and a half. Another is that the Snails is quickly becoming one of the biggest artists on the scene right now. Both artists have been pushing the creative envelope, so this tour is really going to be something special, folks.

What’s really special about this tour is the fact that Brillz has been able to sustain the world of TWONK and even push it to a whole new level. What started out as an inside joke between close friends has rapidly grown into a way of thinking and living.

Alvin Risk is starting the new year off with a brand new music video for “Zoom,” off his 2013 Junk Food album, inspired from one of the internet’s favorite memes, Nyan Cat.

“Zoom” sounds like it comes straight from an Atari game soundtrack. The track is a whirlwind of 8-bit techno complete with a classic Alvin Risk twist, making it a dark, cinematic song that sounds like it came straight out of an Atari.

The music video to accompany the release of “Zoom” perfectly embodies the track’s essence, as it depicts a digital Alvin Risk protecting the earth from evil space cats with the help of his Nyan Cat friends (one of them with an odd resemblance to OWSLA founder Skrillex).

Alvin Risk is set to embark on his New Moon Tour starting in Miami next week which will include guests like Brillz and Skrillex. See below for more dates.

]]> One year ago today, I wrote my first article for JNTM titled, “Top 5: Trap Music Producers”. Well it has been a whirlwind year for the then burgeoning genre of EDM with roots in the hip-hop community. In 2013, Trap artists rose to the top of popular festivals edging out the reigning genre dubstep.

I was planning on writing another “Top 5” post, but there are so many trap artists and sub genres I think a simple retrospective of the genre with suffice. Let’s take a look at what 2012’s top trap producers are up to and the future of the genre.

Baauer

Since we profiled Baauer in 2012 his career has skyrocketed. However annoying “The Harlem Shake” phenomenon was it did help bring Baauer and trap into the public eye. Since his breakout success Baauer has feuded with Azaelia Banks, collaborated with Jay-Z, and embarked on tours with Danny Brown and RL Grime.

Most recently, the Brooklyn transplant collaborated with RL Grime on the massively popular “Infinite Daps” If there is a face to the Trap movement it’s probably Baauer.

Bro Safari also had a successful 2013.  He headlined the Animal House tour with other trap mainstays, ETC! ETC!, CRNKN, and Brillz. Additionally, Bro Safari had a short run opening up for EDM wunderkind Skrillex on his Fall Club Tour 2013.

The young producer has produced remixes for Kill the Noise, Steve Aoki, and Skrillex. In June he released the collaborative EP “Animal” with UFO!

Top Trap Producers

The enigmatic producer has enjoyed moderate success in the past year. He has continued his “Trap Shit” series and released tracks through Boys Noize Records and OWSLA. Additionally, UZ has crafted remixes for Jack Beats, Zeds Dead, and Alex Metric.

It’s still a mystery who is behind the mask, but I think we will see more of the gilded masquerade in 2014.

Kid Kamillion

Looks like we can’t predict them all! Kid Kamillion has virtually fallen off the map in 2013. After releasing his massive remix to A-Trak‘s “Heads Will Roll”, Kid Kamillion has slowly been releasing tracks throughout the year.

Kamillion never made it on the festival circuit and it appears he is only performing in his hometown of New Orleans. I just listened to his newest EP, it’s not bad but it’s nothing special.

Artists Who Blew Up in 2013

What began as a side-project of hard house producer Clockwork has quickly become the more recognizable name in EDM. RL Grime’s popular Halloween mixes are some of the best in trap music as the young producer intuitively mixes contemporary trap with 90’s hip-hop staples.

Earlier this year RL Grime embarked on the “Infinite Daps” tour with Baauer and Ryan Hemsworth. Additionally, he performed some of the hardest sets at Hard Summer and Hard Haunted this year. Remixes of tracks by Chief Keef, Rihanna, and Benny Benassi indicate we will be seeing more Grime in the New Year.

Artists Hudson Mohawke and Lunice had been producing hip-hop tracks for years before joining forces to form TNGHT.

The duo’s 2012 debut ep “TNGHT” garnered critical acclaim and has been used in everything from shoe commercials to being sample on Kanye West’s “Blood on the Leaves.” Stellar performances as Hard Summer and Coachella cemented their status as trap innovators. Several artists have adopted TNGHT’s use of “brass” synthesizers.

Brillz rose to fame after releasing an insane remix for Kill The Noise’s “Roots”, and he has been releasing track after delicious track since.

What So Not, utilizes crunchy synthesizer and a heavy style that isn’t seen often. Their remix of Major Lazer’s, Get Free has attracted over 500,000 hits on Soundcloud.

Kill the Noise has teamed up with some seriously heavy-hitting EDM all stars for his his remixed release of his 2012 EP BLVCK MVGIC, and although the EP won’t be released until September 3, 2013, we’ve got an inside look at some of the tracks that will be included in the Kill the Noise Black Magic Remixes EP.

Artists like Kill Paris, Brosafri, UFO!, and Brillz all make an appearance, and even Kill the Noise gets a shot at a remix for his own EP. One of the first preview releases for this EP is from up and coming Brooklyn-based electro-soul group ExMAG who take a stab at remixing “Jump Ya Body,” giving it a completely different vibe from the original with a slowed down, funky trap feel.

Another pre-released track from the EP is from Miami duo GTA who give the track “Saturn” an incredible face lift. In true GTA fashion, the song is transformed into an instant party classic — just wait for that second drop. Oof.

Needless to say we will be waiting for the release of the Kill the Noise Black Magic Remixes EP in hopes that it will be just as good as his last remixes EP for the album Roots, another incredible and underrated EP from a very incredible and underrated artist.
