After having somewhat of a sleepy year (terrible), Sleepy Tom is back in full force with his all-new, kick-ass, two-track EP, Jobless. For a while, we were a bit concerned as ST had only released a music video for “The Currency,” and left no hints regarding any new music. Luckily, the dude came through with something major.

Sleepy Tom is Canada’s latest homegrown hotshot putting a unique stamp on modern day dance music. Aftger the Vancouver-based producer dropped The Currency, his frirecracker of a debut EP on Fool’s Gold, he became an in-demand remixer adding stomping club muscle to official releases for Diplo, Anna Lunoe, Rebecca & Fiona and other festival favorites.

ST is poised for even bigger things with the hotly anticipated Jobless EP (another forward-thinking collection of hybrid club tunes already supported by A-Trak, BBC DJ Annie Nightengale and more), not to mention a non-stop stream of DJ mixes, bootlegs, and gigs worldwide. Stay woke!

It’s been a while since we’ve heard from our good friend, Sleepy Tom. His exclusive Earmilk mix was off the chain, but other than that our neighbor from the north has remained somewhat in the dark since we interviewed him last year.

But, as the saying goes, one most go through darkness to reach the light (or something), and that’s exactly what’s happened with Sleepy Tom.

Earlier today, ST released his video for “The Currency” via Rolling Stone; a huge accomplishment to say the least.

The video depicts an amateur camera crew filming a  Leiman & Sacs holiday party that goes south after a team of crooks takes them for all they’re worth, all while Sleepy Tom’s claim-to-fame banger plays throughout.

Artists to Watch 2013

Flume

22-year-old Australian producer Flume got his start last year with his self-titled, 15-track album. His singles “Holdin On,” and “Sleepless,” were both chart toppers in his native country, and his most recent remix of Disclosure’s “You and Me” has been making huge waves in the online scene, gaining him a ton of new Facebook fans.

Flume’s “love trap” style is both funky and sexy, which completely separates him from all other artists. His 2013 US/Canada tour, which included multiple shows in Austin for SXSW, was the first of what we think will be many US appearances for this artist on the rise.

Sleepy Tom

We’ve been huge fans of Sleepy Tom since before our interview with him a couple months back. This guy has had a huge year — his monster EP, The Currency, was released on Fools Gold Records, his remixes and bootlegs have gotten thousands of plays on SoundCloud, and he just had a guest spot on Diplo’s BBC show, Diplo & Friends.

Sleepy Tom has that big room sound without the bro feeling, if that makes any sense. His music is fun and creative. Bouncy and hard at the same time. The Vancouver native has been playing shows across Canada and the US, and we can only pray we get to see him on tour sometime soon.

Lindsay Lowend

Washington D.C. based producer Lindsay Lowend is by far and away one of the funkiest new producers to break out on to the electronic scene. His EP Wind Fish is chock-full of some of the biggest and probably most refreshing sounds we’ve heard this year. Another young producer, Lindsay Lowend is only going up with his unique genre-bending style.

Combining elements of trap, funk, and 8-bit tunes, Lindsay Lowend brings a new take on what most would call “chill” music. It’s like if Super Mario was a member of Chromeo. Although we don’t have any information regarding any future plans for Lowend, we guarantee he’ll be one of the best artists of 2014 and beyond

What So Not

In 2011, What So Not released 7 Dollar, an EP that was sort of all over the place in terms of genres. With a combination Moombahton and House music, it wasn’t very clear what these two were trying to accomplish. The EP still kicked some serious ass, and got them a release on Mad Decent. This year, however, Australian duo What So Not has truly proven themselves to be one of the best artists to watch in the next coming year.

With their release of The Quack EP on OWSLA Records and countless remixes, What So Not has gotten the attention of DJs like Flosstradamus, Tiga, and Nero. Comprised of Flume (yup), and Emoh Instead, What So Not has really grown into their own within the past year. With a combination of genuinely fun house and some super dirty trap/hip hop influenced tracks, these guys are going to be some awesome dudes to keep your eye on.

Icarus

Earlier this month we got to interview the UK duo Icarus, who just had their first EP released on OWSLA Records. We were shocked when we saw these guys weren’t getting enough attention, as the aforementioned EP, Steal The Sun, was one of the best releases of 2013 hands down. Pulling from the underground/garage/house family, Icarus combines a four-on-the-floor beat with some of that sexy, booty-shaking bass everyone knows and loves.

While the brother duo has yet to cross the pond, they continue to play shows in the UK. As their fan base continues to grow, we’re sure we’ll be seeing plenty of Icarus within the next year, especially with OWSLA on backing them the whole way. Icarus is definitely the number 1 artist to watch for 2014 and beyond. Go like them on Facebook and watch them climb the ladder to stardom.

Rooted in Phoenix and now based out of Los Angeles, producer/DJ Drezo is without a doubt on the rise to stardom. With countless mixes, remixes, and originals, Drezo is only getting started. Drezo was recently selected to perform an hour long set at EDC Orlando after winning the Insomniac Discovery Project for his original track “Peak.”

JNTM: To you, what’s the most important part about being an independent artist on the rise? What are some of the biggest challenges? What’s the most enjoyable? Is there a mantra of yours you tell yourself to stay focused?

Vancouver native Sleepy Tom has been making huge waves in the EDM scene for the past few years. With some heavy-hitting remixes, including his “Set it Off” remix which appeared on Diplo’s Express Yourself Remix album, Sleepy Tom’s work has been featured in live sets of DJ’s like Felix Cartal, Botnek, and Zeds Dead.

His newest EP The Currency is a collection of tracks that break through the boundaries of genre labels and instill hope for EDM fans who have given up on the likelihood of anything original surfacing onto the scene.

We had a chance to ask Sleepy Tom a few questions about his musical influences, what it’s like working with A-Trak, and what’s in store for the future of electronic music.

Just Noise to Me: What got you into producing?

Sleepy Tom: Music has always been a big interest of mine. I grew up playing guitar in rock bands and started writing songs at a pretty young age. My cousins had Reason on their computer, so I think that was my introduction to production. I’d just screw around with the drum machine in there and make loops.

It wasn’t really until 2008 that I really dove into it. I started listening to a lot more electronic music before then. Crystal Castles, MSTRKRFT, Justice etc. and when the whole remix culture blew up I was like, I think I could do this.

JNTM: Who are your favorite artists right now? EDM or not.

ST: Miguel, Oliver, Cashmere Cat, Tame Impala, Kendrick Lamar.

JNTM: As a producer who isn’t really restricted to any specific genre, where do you see the electronic movement moving?

ST: Music with a little more grit and attitude. Less “shiny.” I hear a lot of the old rave elements coming back into dance music, which is tiiiiight.

JNTM: What’s your favorite part about releasing your album on Fool’s Gold?

ST: Having been a fan of the label for several years makes it pretty special. They put so much love into every release they do. Nick [Catchdubs] and Alain [A-trak] picked through all my demos and chose whats on “The Currency.” Having them as filters has really helped me to focus in on what works in my productions and what makes them unique.

JNTM: Being from Vancouver, what can you tell us about the EDM scene in Canada?

ST: It’s big! You can see big name DJs on a weekly basis and BC has a bunch of great electronic music festivals during the summer. There’s always cool new producers popping up in Vancouver too.

JNTM: What software do you prefer to use when producing? Abelton? Logic?

ST: Logic

JNTM: What can we expect for Sleepy Tom as for as touring, another EP, remixes?

ST: I’ll be doing some touring in the fall. Not sure where yet, but it’s getting put together. I’ve got a bunch of remixes coming out this summer for some very cool artists. There will be another EP eventually…

JNTM: Just for fun, if you weren’t a producer, what would your dream job be?

ST:  Basketball player. HOOP DREAMS!
