In the wake of DJ Rashad‘s death, LA’s premier beat collective dedicated their weekly cypher to the deceased footwork legend.

Team Supreme epitomizes the LA beat scene. Renowned for having a forward-thinking approach to the art of mixing as well as being perhaps LA’s most prolific DJ crew, Team Supreme is home to some personal favorites like Djemba Djemba, Mr. Carmack, Great Dane, and Penthouse Penthouse.

Having a huge hand in the progression of the LA underground and EDM in general (think the recent rise of booty tech and Jersey/Baltimore club), footwork music serves as the basis for a variety of budding dance music genres. That said, the EDM community has a lot to thank DJ Rashad for, despite the fact that he passed way before his time.

Nevertheless, it’s tributes like this mix as well as the success of a new generation of artists that will ensure Rashad’s widespread influence is carried on.

“Heroes get remembered, but legends never die.”

Smartphone, internet, television, radio—if you own or have access to any of these resources, there’s a good chance you heard about the mayhem that ensued at SXSW a couple of weeks ago. Or perhaps you’re one of the lucky few who lived it. However, you probably didn’t get to hear this killer mix from Kronika.

A member of one of LA’s most prominent future bass labels, Soulection, Kronika has yet to produce any of her own original music. Instead, she showcases her impeccable mixing skills, featuring tracks from a number of the collective’s own artists including DPAT, Jo_Def, and the one and only Mr. Carmack.

Aside from the savage opener, courtesy of JFKrateZ and RVDICAL LE KID, the defining moment for this mix is the smooth transition from a rework of Hall and Oates‘ “I Can’t Go For That” into the appropriately named “Biggie’s Theme” by DJ Sega. Tell me that’s not gold!

Anyway, you probably shouldn’t listen to this around any glass or sharp objects as it will invariably cause you to thrash around like a crazy person, endangering everyone around you. The last thing we want is for anyone to get hurt.

(TurtleTip: Aside from the fact you might injure someone, including yourself, you don’t want anyone to catch you dancing like this. They might think you’re attacking thew with imaginary shuriken.)

Thanks for tuning in, peeps! Catch you next week for some more TGT action!

Stay PLURsty!!!

One of our favorite artists to cover, the one and only Mr. Carmack, dropped three new heaters yesterday. Peep them here and share!

Perhaps you picked up on it, but clearly the second track, ATX, is the rawest of the three. The grimy vocal samples fit perfectly over the dark, unforgiving sub kicks and the spacey synth patterns. Needless to say it’s straight FLAME! And unlike many of his other releases, it’s not too short to fully enjoy.

The Waka Flocka Flame homage on Denzel Curry’s Threats is also a nice touch. On the third track, Carmack pays tribute to one of the people responsible for popularizing trap music in America and paving the way for countless other musicians to hop on board.

If this is your first experience with the Hawaiian composer’s music, you better get up to speed quick! This man is swiftly rising to the greater halls of the internet music universe. Check out some more Carmack jams on Soundcloud and keep up to speed!

Not that I don’t like it, really I do. The bubbly synths and the agressive percussion make for a nice contrast. And the vocal/gun samples are a nice touch. It’s just that I feel like I’ve heard it before.

It sounds like a cross between Gesaffelstein and TNGHT. Again, despite how painfully short the track is, it’s pretty neat. Definitely not something to write home about though. Perhaps, a longer, varied version would’ve been more captivating.

“Colta and Me” is a decent track, but it lacks the distinct originality that we’ve come to epect from the Hawaiian producer. Nevertheless, Mr. Carmack and Colta will probably continue to take the underground dance music scene by storm regardless of whether or not this snippet is a hit.

The transmutation from underground DJ to worldwide EDM superstar is something very few artists ever complete. Even fewer successfully cross over without losing their authenticity or their voracious underdog mentality. Over the last decade or so, the rise of electronic musicians to rock star status has made it all too easy for producers and DJs alike to make a killing and subsequently sell out in order to maintain their mainstream popularity.

RL Grime is not one of those Djs.

Just two days before releasing his long awaited collaboration with beloved Aussie duo What So Not, RL Greezy laid down a bodacious trap mix for London radio show Rinse FM. That underdog mentality I mentioned earlier, yeah, he’s still got it. Not only has the LA wunderkind produced plenty of popular remixes and originals, but he continues to pack his live mixes with straight heaters old and new (but mostly new).

The Rinse FM mix opens up with “WAAAAIT”, a song by one of my favorite up-and-comers, Mr. Carmack. If you haven’t familiarized yourself with his music yet, do yourself a solid ASAP! RL Grime progresses into a series of ultra-heavy trap beats and a variety of UK-friendly tracks. There’s UK grime, juke, techno, breakbeat, you name it.

What stands out about the selection is RL’s choice of lyrical content. The subject matter of nearly all the songs containing lyrics is about one thing: flourishing. And that’s exactly what Grime, born Henry Steinway is doing. From Drake‘s customarily boastful “Trophies” to the remix of Lil’ Flip‘s nostalgic 2007 rap hit “I’m A Balla (Flip My Chips)”, RL Grime has made it abundantly clear that he’s on top and that he plans to stay there. The only way he’ll do that is if he continues to incorporate a diverse array of styles that are both innovate and appealing to a large audience. Up until this point, he’s proven he is both willing and able to do so. And for that, we tip our hats to him.

(TurtleTip: Make sure you scoop the free download and pop champagne to it with all your buds. That’s what it’s there for, trust me!)

Also, never forget:

Major Lazer stayed true to their style with this one, and for that reason I was already stoked. The forever killin’ it vibes of Pharrell accompanying the track brings it to the next level. Without missing a beat Williams flows, seemingly breathless through the whole track with lyrics that also stays true to the Lazer style.

Hearing it for the first time I thought, “fuck yeah, Major Lazer. Get it.” My second thought thereafter was, “I can’t wait for some sort of ‘trap’ remix.”

My hopes came into fruition when last week, the king of the “refix,” Mr. Carmack dropped a bangin’ edit of the track.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/137090962″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_artwork=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

Carmack’s remix, in my opinion, is an example of how a remix should be; reminiscent of the original, but a completely new take on the track itself. Carmack did just that as he used very selective samples from the original mix, and even adds new vocal samples to give the original mix a swift kick in the pants, such as the deep patois reggae vocal sample that accompanies the build up.

If you know me at all, nothing hypes me up more than patois reggae vocals, which before the first break, hooked me in immediately. At that point I knew I would hearing this remix in many live sets to come.

The drop hits you like bars of soap inside of a sock. The first 808 hits on the fourth beat in the first measure, as we’ve heard in many of the other mainstream trap tracks you’ve heard in the past year.

These toned 808s continue throughout as the melody is carried by a catchy and raw synth, while minimal vocal samples from the original Pharrell verse act as percussive grooves in the overall mix.

This “refix,” as it were, is less than three minutes which goes to show that it was made purely for the use of fucking shit up in a set. Needless to say if you aren’t familiar with Mr. Carmack, you best familiarize yo’self.

Major Lazer’s killin’ it, obviously Pharrell is killin’ it, now you know Carmack is killin’ it. It’s going to be a great festival season ya’ll. Get ready. And get ready to hear this track in many a set to come.

These cats are swiftly solidifying their place as the dynamic duo of the Pacific. “Twilight” offers a more twerk-friendly sound (that’s right, twerk-friendly). Whereas “Torture” takes on a more abrasive approach. The low end on both of these tracks is murderous, but “Torture” especially has one of those jaw-snapping 808 kicks that’ll have even the squarest of squares doing the turnup dance like it’s 2013!

As they continue to develop their own unique sound through the use of popular trap cadences and distinct sample/synth combos, both Jacuzzi and Mr. Carmack remain examples of rising talent not to be overlooked. Be on the lookout for more bangers from both artists this year!

At the stroke of midnight Hawaiian producer, Mr. Carmack, released a pair soulful jazz tracks via DIEHIGH Records. Kick back and enjoy!

Aaron Carmack (that’s Mr. to you) is known for blending elements of vintage hip hop, jazz, future bass, and trap to create a fresh new sound. Recently he’s been blowing up all over the internet and in live sets from big name artists, and for good reason!

A rough cut of “Oh, Brooklyn” went up on ‘Mack’s Soundcloud little over a week ago. But the second track, “Red Shift”, is brand spankin’ new.

It’ll be interesting to see what’s in store for this groovy dude from the islands this year; his music is becoming more familiar over time. But, will he have what it takes to spin larger gigs and make a name for himself within the now massive EDM scene?

If you think so, be sure to support and keep an eye out for some more saucy Carmack tuneage in the near future!
