A Netflix Original, Stranger Things is coming back this summer for its third season, so it is the perfect time to binge on the first two seasons. The show takes place in the 1980s with a cast of fantastic kids who will make you laugh through the thriller. The strange storyline is captivating and leaves you wide-eyed. Each episode only gets better!

Killing Eve – BBC America/AMC

Sandra Oh is back in this drama, which just started its second season on both AMC and BBC America. This thriller has a great cast and interesting storyline following a creative spy. In just a short amount of time, it has been able to attract a large following leaving viewers wanting more!

Flume’s last album, Flume, was released in 2012, so it’s been a hot minute since our ears have heard a full album of new material. We’re excited about the album release, but for now, we’re stoked to have Say It on repeat. Despite the commercial success (radio play), we still can’t get enough. In the second single, following the amazing “Never Be Like You,” Tove Lo’s voice adds the perfect overlay to this track, speeding up and slowing down lyrics in all the right places. Speaking as a music noob, I can still recognize that the Swedish singer and Australian producer made a smash.

Earlier this month, Los Angeles’ highly anticipated HARD Summer took place in its new home on the radically expanded grounds of the Whittier Narrows Recreation Area. Outdoing themselves not only in the amplitude of attendees, but with the mind-boggling lineup, Gary Richards (Destructo) and his crew delivered one wild party.

Notorious artists such as the Jack U duo, Nero, Dillon Francis, A-Trak, and Disclosure headlined the overwhelmingly distinguished lineup of artists, although all of the talent could have been headlining acts. Each headliner delivered a wild, main stage primed set, capping off each night of the weekend with a bang. Of course we could not miss the rare union of Skrillex and Diplo coming together to form Jack U, nor could I have passed up on crowd-pleasing funnyman Dillon Francis.

However, since the day the lineup dropped back in April, I was beyond enthusiastic to see the amount of funky deep house and techno house talent that was represented. Don’t get me wrong, witnessing the Jack U closing spectacle the first night in the rain, playing banger after banger, setting off flames and lasers was incredible, but what really got me going was the intense funkiness that characterized this summer lineup.

Watching A-Trak do what he does best on his turntables in complete awe was unforgettable, and Disclosure’s all-out, strictly business live set won’t soon be forgotten either, however, I was mostly grasped by HARD’s heaping dose of groovy garage funk. The acts I boogied down at were marked by surprisingly small crowds in HARD’s multicolored tent stages where I spent most of my time out of the dust and getting sweaty in the massive awnings from group-session groovin’.

Saturday kick-started the funk in the Pink Tent. Representing the badass ladies taking over the scene, JNTM favorite J.Phlip had the Pink Tent going off with her infectious, deep bass lines meshed with bouncy disco elements. J.Phlip throws down a party, never a moment of monotony, and she effortlessly makes the crowd dance as hard as they can as everybody gets down to her bootylicious house. I stayed right where I was in the Pink Tent as J.Phlip came to an end for my most anticipated set of the weekend, Tchami.

This Paris native is conquering the states with his uncanny, groovy take on what he is calling “future house.” Tchami flaunted his melodic, deep basslines making anyone and everyone boogie down, whether they were in control or not.

The Pink Tent was booming and what seemed to be a smaller sized crowd was now a roaring crowd of people reflexively dancing in unison, almost as though Tchami was robotically controlling the entire Pink Tent.

From the visuals and the grooving to his exotically catchy take on deep electro house and addictive hit remixes, Tchami tremendously exceeded my expectations and upheld my every reason for anticipation. I headed over to the Purple Tent for the infamous British OWSLA duo, Jack Beats, initially to catch a quick glimpse of what their hype was about.

It quickly turned into me becoming hooked by their incomparable sound blending everything from hip-hop to drum and bass to dubstep to electro/deep house. Their captivating originality makes Jack Beats’ set one I will not soon forget either.

Sunday’s staggering schedule of performances had me restless before I even entered the festival’s gates. My day started early and I soon realized the incredible inflation in attendees, dust, and intoxicating performances. Australia’s Danny Blanc, known as Wax Motif, brought his fresh and unique mixing technique to the Green Tent.

Wax Motif’s techno house sound had crowds flocking from every direction to get down and dance. His set showcased elements of hip-hop throughout his distinct techno dance style and was the perfect prelude to the Green Tent’s next electrifying star, Hannah Wants.

As one of her premiere US appearances, Hannah’s garage-house sound that incorporates familiar hip-hop and R&B tracks had the crowd boogying down. Her use of heavy bass creates a toxic sound that had me goggle over her and her groovy deep house style that impressively stimulated the entire crowd. Hannah Wants got me and the rest of the crowd so pumped for the style she was creating as well as ceremoniously showcasing the success of women artists across the dance music spectrum.

I moved from the Green Tent to the Purple Tent to experience a different take on deep house by Pittsburg’s own Kastle. His sunset performance brought a soulful edge to grime and garage style dubstep. The crowd was disappointingly small considering Kastle’s love to party that is represented by his accomplished development of underground electronic music fused with hip-hop.

His sound is so clean and precise due to his background as an engineer you can’t help but wonder when people will catch on. Kastle effortlessly warmed up the crowd for Wave Racer to take the decks, flipping the party upside down.

The crowd was immediately hypnotized by Thomas Purcell’s, a.k.a Wave Racer‘s, playfully distinct sound. His mix of bouncy, animated synthesizers, electro house, and samples of 90’s gaming systems are compiled into an unmatched blend of sunshine that intoxicated the Purple Tent. Wave Racer’s unconventional and whimsical take on future bass and warping of party jams had everyone boogying down.

The final night of HARD ended with a rapid fire round-robin of sets, as we checked on Gary Richard’s funk-laced techno set as Destructo, Disclosure‘s absolutely jaw-dropping live showcase at the main stage, alongside R&B maven Mary J. Blige, DJ Mustard‘s rowdy hip-hop shakedown, and Nero’s festival-ending return to the American festival circuit.

My weekend ended with some of the best sets of the festival, where I got to see some of the freshest talents dance music has to offer. Nero’s set wound down with their famed “Must Be The Feeling,” artfully mixed with Justice’s pounding magnum opus “Genesis.” I let the goosebumps take over as I put my hands in the air, let my head tilt back, and I took a moment to take it all in.

I had survived HARD Summer. As I joined the mass exodus of exhausted fans still buzzing from the festival’s finale, I realized I had seen every set I wanted to see from the lengthy weekend lineup, while also turning myself onto some brand new sounds I had previously never heard before.

Known for their ultra-diverse roster each year, HARD had me at hello, and now the waiting game begins with anticipation soaring high for next year’s big event.

Get ready for some of the most ear-blood-inducing tracks you’ve heard in quite some time, as Smog newcomer Stratus releases a three track EP entitled Power Up.

The EP begins with the title track that sounds like if Skrillex and 12th Planet had a baby, and then that baby made actually had some demon Datsik baby inside of it. In other words, it’s pretty fuckin’ filthy.

Next up is “YES,” a melodic trap tune with some middle-eastern influences throughout. “YES,” is definitely the type of track I could see knocking out a festival crowd throughout this summer.

Finally, we have “Bermuda,” a track that is by far the dirtiest song on the EP and a song that is a crossbreed of dubstep, trap, and even a little trance at the top.

Disco revivalist, turntable tyrants A-Trak and Armand Van Helden, have released their new LP; a glorious 54 minute homage to disco, with classic hip-hop elements laced throughout. The two mighty crate-diggers, otherwise known together as Duck Sauce, have made a big splash as their highly anticipated, full-length studio album Quack has finally reached the wire.

The release marks a notable trend as artists are beginning to move away from shorter EPs and are beginning to offer more full-length projects instead. The long awaited debut LP may be the most appropriately named collection of music in history, as the album’s title reflects exactly what the album is meant to represent; simply quack.

The album is quintessential Duck Sauce– its goofy, groovy, and delivers the insatiable desire to dance like a complete fool. Quack, in this case, is much more than merely the average mallard’s battle cry, but rather quack means unparalleled, good natured folly. It means embracing the crazy, where nothing is out of bounds.

It means busting some fly moves on the dance floor at your niece’s quinceañera, or the street corner, or even the kitchen counter. The album represents a dangerously fresh, frivolous, ultra cool disregard for the rules. It means quite simply not giving one single fuck and having a good time while doing so.

Quack stands as the lighter, whimsical, not-so-serious side of dance music, much in line with Trak and Armand’s philosophy on producing music overall. And furthermore, in the face of this industry’s astronomical expansion into the global limelight, a little lightening up would do us all some good, according to the vinyl veterans.

The LP also offers a sort of historical perspective on the two perennial pranksters. The album rounds together canonic Duck Sauce tunes of old, and pairs them with brand new, in-your-face nu-disco selections.

The dynamic duo’s lead off single from 2009, “aNYway” finds itself rubbing shoulders with newborn inspirations of funk and hip-hop such as “Radio Stereo” and “Charlie Chazz & Rappin’ Ralph.” Similarly, the duo’s club-favored, inescapable sing along jam “Barbra Streisand” matches a Duck Sauce vintage classic with new, sexy styling on tracks like “NRG.”

Duck Sauce’s official debut also characterizes more than just the duo’s production philosophy. Quack paints a cultural mural of a side of dance music that may otherwise be overshadowed by kandi-clan teens at massive festivals where neon tutus reign supreme and the drop is all that really matters.

Quack takes the listener down the hip-hop hardwired alleyways of Brooklyn, into dusty record stores, through buzzing barber shops, and back to the dance floor. The 12-track LP offers a much needed departure from “EDM,” but with a light hearted intention, free of any pompous judgement against the greater dance music spectrum.

2014 was my seventh year attending the McDowell Mountain Music Festival, and as each year passes the better the festival becomes. The line-ups, the crowd, the vendors all keep exceeding previous years.

The festival has evolved and taken on many forms: once hosted at West World in Scottsdale, then a parking lot, and now it’s finally found a suitable home at the Margret T. Hance Park in downtown Phoenix. Three days of soaking up the sun while grooving to a wide variety of artists and enjoying Oregon’s best brewed beer, to me, is the best way to spend a weekend.

MMMF has found a beautiful rhythm — and I’m not just talking about the drum circles. They’ve harnessed the power of good will, positivity, and music, to give back to the community in a major way.

The first day the crowd formed around great local acts like Decker and Spafford. The Friday night headliners kicked the weekend off right with the raw power of funk giants, Lettuce, followed by the bass driven sounds of the always amazing Gramatik, and then capped off by the all powerful STS9, turning the world upside down and leaving the audience in a whirlwind of dance.

Saturday brought a huge turn out, there seemed to be twice as many people as the day before, which could mean the good word about the fest had traveled, the headlining acts brought their fans along with them, or maybe no one had to work, but all it really meant was that there was more money being raised, and more people to be a part of something really special in their community.

The music kept comin’ as local acts such as, Jared and the Mill fresh from SXSW took the main stage in the morning, and The Hourglass Cats in the early evening. But the main stage was then taken over by Dispatch, playing everything you’d want to hear. All the hits. It was a show the audience could sing along with, and had been looking forward to all day.

For me, it was an amazing experience, growing up with their music. Night fell as Slightly Stoopid took the stage and vibed hard with reggae vibes and enormous dubby bass. The party kept on going as the crowd tossed on their dancing shoes and grooved to The Disco Biscuits. It seemed as though their whole set was just one continued song, but the highlight was certainly their cover of “Safety Dance,” which brought the crowd into a frenzy.

The third and final day brought acts to the stage that ended the weekend perfectly. I arrived just as the ever-funky, ever-rad-as-hell G.Love and Special Sauce took the stage, and just like Dispatch, the crowd was in a full on sing-a-long/dance frenzy. Country pop-star Dwight Yoakam brought an interesting change of vibe, but also a diverse set, friendly to the older crowd and families alike.

Sunday night brought Ben Harper to the main stage, for a heavy blues inspired set. Alongside him, the incredible blues harmonica legend, Charlie Musselwhite. Together, Ben and Charlie dominated the stage with powerful rhythms that was truly an amazing set to behold. And thus another McDowell Mountain Music Festival had ended, and what a weekend it was.

McDowell Mountain is truly a festival like no other, family oriented, charity driven, and brewery sponsored. To know that every dollar you spent was going directly to the Phoenix Children’s Hospital, among other charities, made every beer, every bite, every t-shirt that much more special.

We noticed something very special immediately upon entering BUKU 2014… It might have been because we were totally out of our element in the deep south, or maybe it was being so close to the Mississippi river. Maybe it was the perfect weather or maybe it was the beautiful people… No matter what it was, we knew we were going to have an incredible time at BUKU right from the get-go.

The festival was set up exactly like a shotgun home in New Orleans: the stages were all in line with each other, allowing attendees to go from the main stage all the way to the back alley without having to walk around aimlessly or use a confusing map. Everything was straight forward and easily navigated. You could literally walk in a straight line next to the river and hit ever stage. It was incredibly easy and convenient.

Along the way from one stage to another, concert-goers could stop by an assortment of INCREDIBLE vendors including food, merchandise, and more. New Orleans is home to some of the best cooking in the entire world, so taking a break for food was something to look forward to. From brats to pizza and even some vegetarian options, BUKU had the food game locked down.

BUKU 2014 Day 1 Recap:

If you weren’t able to make it to the first day of BUKU as soon as the gates open, you missed out on some serious up-and-comers. Treasure Fingers was a blast in the Ballroom, and NO native DXXXY tore it up in the back alley (check out DXXXY’s full set from BUKU right here) before Jesse Slayter completely blew it up. Kid Kamillion was after Slayter making the Back Alley the place to be for some of the best underrated acts at the festival.

Meanwhile at the Power Plant main stage, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony were bringing everyone back to the 90’s with all of their hits. Seeing them followed by NAS was one of the coolest and most nostalgic festival experiences ever.

The Ballroom definitely had its own vibes throughout the entire afternoon with Classixx and Miami Horror playing some incredible live sets that were each funkier than the next.

We were also able to hop on board the S.S. Blu-Ku to catch Big Freedia’s Twerk Lesson which had to have been one of the most unique experiences of any festival we have ever been to. Watching a swarm of people twerk as hard as they could while Big Freedia slapped their asses was hilariously educational.

If you were looking for a place to really get down, the Float Den was where it was at. Good lord was that place sweaty. Watching Paper Diamond we thought there was no possible way that stage could get any more rowdy, until Carnage came on and completely ruined every one in attendance.

Once the sun went down was when things really got goin’ at BUKU. After rocking out to Sleigh Bells (who were extremely impressive and above our expectations) we were relaxing with a few beers during Dusky‘s deep set in the Back Alley before catching the last bit of Ellie Goulding at the main stage.

One of the biggest (and best) surprises of the entire festival was getting to catch The Gaslamp Killer‘s set in the ballroom between Pusha T and Chance The Rapper. GLK’s set was full of awesome new music from Hudson Mowhake and live scratching that showed the audience what an actual DJ does…

The best set of the night (and possibly the entire weekend) was without a doubt Chance The Rapper. Saying his stage presence is “high energy” does not do the man justice. An hour was not nearly enough time to soak in the magic that was Chance. His band was tight, on point, and perfectly coupled his quick flow.

BUKU 2014 Day 2 Recap:

Day 2 of BUKU 2014 started off harder than expected with DJ Snake in the Float Den. It was our first time seeing Snake perform live and it was not a let down whatsoever. Focusing more on his  festival set than what he showcased in his two-hour essential mix, DJ Snake definitely blew us away. But nothing could prepare us for what was to come.

As we made our way into the Ballroom, we noticed something strange happening during Dan Deacon‘s set. He had shifted the entire audience into a giant dance party — and not the kind you would expect. Playing on the floor instead of on stage, Dan Deacon was able to shape the crowd into a huge circle that completely occupied the space of the Ballroom.

People would take turns running into the middle and showing off their moves. Once he felt the crowd had enough, Dan had everyone run to the center and greet each other with high fives. It was yet again one of the most unique things you could ever witness at a festival.

Since the Back Alley was a success for us on the first day of the festival, we made our way back and once again were not dissappointed. We caught another New Orleans native, Shanook, on stage while Boyfriend was getting down with the crowd performing one of her newest tracks. It was just another in-your-face experience from BUKU.

One of the most anticipated acts of BUKU (for the JNTM BUKrew at least) was the Funklords known only as Chromeo. It was awesome getting a chance to see the the guys live, right in midst of their 2014 tour. The guys were on point as always and their set featured some of their new jams like “Jealous” and “Come Alive,” both of which were even better live.

Cashmere Cat was another catch in the Back Alley, playing everything from his own Wedding Bells EP to other FoFoFadi-inspired artists like Drippy Dolphin and Trippy Turtle. Cat went super hard and had the entire back alley packed to the brim with adoring fans.

There was really no other choice other than seeing Baauer b2b RL Grime. Two of trap music biggest stars collaborating with each other behind the decks was by far the most insane experiences of the festival.

After getting completely turnt up at Baauer and RL Grime, we made our way to Soul Clap who was playing two full hours of some of the most soulful, funky house music we had heard all weekend long.

Fortunately the grooves kept on rollin’ with Skream, who as of late has been venturing further away from the disgusting dubstep he made his name with and has moved closer to disco house that had the Back Alley getting down with their funky selves.

After passing through the Float Den to catch a little of Tyler the Creator (who was raunchy and awesome as always), we made our way to the Beats Antique set in the Ballroom. The place was packed and sweatier than ever. The crowd was full of die-hard fans who were dancing and enjoying the last few hours of the festival.

BUKU 2014 Review

The festival was overall a huge success. Everywhere we turned we were met with another great act. The venue could not have been better and the food and beverage vendors were a perfect representation of the host city.

It wasn’t just the entertainment that was impressive, the attendees of BUKU 2014 were also something to write home about. The people in New Orleans are some of the most down to earth and friendly folks. There were multiple times where people would walk up to us and start a conversation like we had all been best friends for years. Now THAT was truly a unique festival experience.

Another important aspect was the art. Now, most festivals say they’re an “music and arts” festival, but not many actually mean it as much as BUKU does. Everything about the festival was in some form or another focused on art. Whether it was the wall of live graffiti or the commissioned piece hanging in the float den, BUKU was actually an art festival.

Overall, the BUKU experience was a refreshing one. The festival is still very young and growing into itself, but that’s what makes it so great. There weren’t a lot of bros or VIP people spending tons of money just to be seen at the show. Everyone in attendance was someone who was there for the music, or at least there to have fun.

That’s the bottom line. The festival was FUN. There was nothing quite like BUKU and I personally cannot wait to return.

JNTM and Travel Hymns have joined forces to cover the BUKU Music + Art Project in the heart of New Orleans.

Yesterday was filled with incredible acts, friendly people, and a lot of surprises. From discovering talents like DXXXY to seeing classic artists like NAS and Bone Thugs and Harmony, the first day of BUKU was beyond amazing.

The festival itself is something to admire as well. Everything is laid out in a way where festival attendees can easily get from one stage to another without too much stress. Each stage has its own energy about it. From the sweaty Float Den to the intimate and house-party-esque Back Alley, BUKU had something for everybody.
