Oliver takes us back to Funkier Times with ‘Fast Forward’

Vaughn Oliver and Oliver Goldstein the DJ duo known as Oliver, is about to release their new EP Light Years Away on September 9th and decided to give us our second taste with a new track ‘Fast Forward’. If ‘Fast Forward’ is any indication on record sound then Oliver just took us back to the 80’s and unveiled their futuristic disco pop to blow our minds.
Oliver jumps on their light cycles for ‘Fast Forward’ as they sound like Daft Punk straight off the Tron Soundtrack. This Funky dance record makes me want to strap on some leather and cruise the city til I find a warehouse to unleash some stone cold moves.

The great thing about EDM is all the styles you can mesh and bring to the table, Oliver is no exception as they mix their take on funky 80’s Disco with a more current synthy electro pop sound.
Oliver uses funky keys and a wailing electro guitar to get you motivated and up on your feet. Once the techno lasers kick in, try keeping your head from bobbing and your body from flailing about as the urban sounds of the city night take over your body.
Not only a feel good track; ‘Fast Forward’ is one of those get shit done tracks. Whether it be racing through traffic on your way to work or going to the gym and trying to get that one extra rep, Oliver pushes you to the brink with their new track.

Dillon Francis Signs to Columbia Records

Earlier today EDM golden boy, Dillon Francis, announced his major label debut. Francis, also known as DJ Hanzel and DJ Rich As Fuck, will release his first full length album through Columbia Records in conjunction with Mad Decent.

The album, originally expected to drop sometime this month, will be titled ‘Money Sucks, Friends Rule’ and is slated for a July release after being pushed back. Naturally, fans are divided on whether or not the record deal will be beneficial to Francis’ career and EDM as a whole. Dillon quickly took to Twitter to address the haters:

Known for his internet antics and his lighthearted persona, Francis poked fun at everyone throwing shade by changing his Twitter handle to “DILLONSELLOUTFRANCIS”. Take that EDM snobs! And to all you diehard Dillon fangirls out there, fret not. DJ Hanzel remains forever faithful…

In the record deal we wrote a clause that Columbia has to send me a 20 dollar gift card to @TacoBell the 5th of each month for 12 months

Drippy Dolphin: ♡-Craaazy-♡

We still don’t know who Drippy Dolphin is exactly. Our staff writer Sam hypothesized that it may be Trippy Turtle AKA Cashmere Cat while our comment section speculated that Drippy could be a collaboration with Wave Racer and DJ Hoodie.

Whoever Drippy Dolphin is exactly doesn’t really matter as he/she/they have just released another chopped-up nineties pop fueled Jersey club track titled ♡-Craaazy-♡.

Very similar in tone to Drippy’s first release ♡-Oooops-♡, ♡-Craaazy-♡ features a melange of samples ranging from Aqua’s “Boom Boom Boom Boom” to gun shots and Aaron Carter.

It’s frenetic, delightfully saccharine and sounds like the love child of DJ A.M., The Spice Girls, and Hubba Bubba.

AAZAR- RELOAD [Mad Decent Release]

I love discovering artists that I have never heard of and I was pleasantly surprised to see this track from newcomer AAZAR show up in my Soundcloud stream earlier today.

While AAZAR may boast only 676 followers on Soundcloud he has already dropped a track with Trap god ƱZ and now has an exclusive release through Mad Decent. There isn’t much information on who AAZAR is or where he hails from, but if the release of RELOAD is any indication we should expect big things from him in the next year.

RELOAD blends classic trap elements with that festival style that has been made popular by Yellow Claw and Carnage. There is a heavy bassline and some fun percussive elements reminiscent of Baauer x RL Grime’s Infinite Daps but this guy is far from derivative

I’d give you more info but that’s pretty much all we know about this up n’ comer! Be sure to follow AAZAR on Soundcloud and keep an ear out for new tracks.

Mutants Presents Lunde Bros Compilation Preview

Sweden, Netherlands and Australia; I’m not sure what it is about these countries but they have been producing some of best tracks to come out in 2014 and our brethren (pun intended) from Stockholm, Lunde Bros, are no different. The duo are gearing up to release Mutants Records’ second mix compilation next Monday, March 24th.

The 15 track compilation features tracks from Mutants’ owner John Dahlback, London’s Kid Massive, Helena and many others.

This compilation is big. Real fucking big.

Comprised mostly of that progressive house/EDM that has been a staple of festivals like EDC, and Ultra this compilation is a bit different from my usual tastes, but I can put my snobbery aside for awhile to really appreciate some really good EDM when it presents itself. For fans of that big banger sound I can’t recommend this upcoming compilation enough,

Mutants Records currently has a preview of the mix up on their Soundcloud which features five previews of unreleased Lunde Bros tracks. For my money, the Lunde Bros shine the brightest on this compilation with fun, future inspired tracks from their catalog like I Wanna Rock It, and If You Wanna. The release of the opening track Knifeproblems will be the first thing on my mind when I boot up my computer Monday morning.

THE THIRD EDITION OF MY MUHFUGGIN MID-WEEK MIX IS HERE.

Here we are again. Wednesday. That teasing little bitch. I woke up late on this Wednesday, as I do on most Wednesdays. To be honest, I wake up late on most days. As long as I’m being honest, I have no idea what I’m writing this for. I’m just trying to take up a little word count because my job requires that I write about things that are of absolutely no interest to me. Would you like to know what does interest me?

Basketball. Pizza that’s too hot for me to eat. Women that are way too hot for me to eat. Video games. Writing. Comedy. Booze. The color purple. True Detective.

But most of all, I love the weekend.

We’re a little more than halfway to the weekend. So close, yet so far. How will we make it? What will calm our restless souls until our fair-haired maiden Friday makes her arrival? We’ll listen to music. AWESOME music. God, this is so lame.

This week’s playlist is an exciting one. We’ve got lots of trap, as per usual. There’s some tasty-ass house music, a little bit of hip hop, a little bit of pop and even some chopped and screwed Kanye. There’s also a track in here that’s 9 months old (Cherry Pepsi) but I liked it so much that I had to include it.

If you don’t like it, write me an angry letter or something.

The Turn Down For What Music Video is Perfect

Earlier this year we saw one of the worst music videos ever made with Billy Ray Cyrus‘ “Achy Breaky 2”. Now we have what could arguably be called the greatest music video ever made. Ok, that’s taking it a bit far but the Turn Down for What music video from DJ Snake and Lil’ Jon is pretty freaking cool.

It’s got everything you could ever want from the medium. Hardcore daggering, bunny hops, butt suplexes, and mechanical genitalia.

I would explain it more deeply but I think we’ll let the video speak for itself.

TurtleGravy Tuesday: RL Grime Rinse FM Mix

The transmutation from underground DJ to worldwide EDM superstar is something very few artists ever complete. Even fewer successfully cross over without losing their authenticity or their voracious underdog mentality. Over the last decade or so, the rise of electronic musicians to rock star status has made it all too easy for producers and DJs alike to make a killing and subsequently sell out in order to maintain their mainstream popularity.

RL Grime is not one of those Djs.

Just two days before releasing his long awaited collaboration with beloved Aussie duo What So Not, RL Greezy laid down a bodacious trap mix for London radio show Rinse FM. That underdog mentality I mentioned earlier, yeah, he’s still got it. Not only has the LA wunderkind produced plenty of popular remixes and originals, but he continues to pack his live mixes with straight heaters old and new (but mostly new).

The Rinse FM mix opens up with “WAAAAIT”, a song by one of my favorite up-and-comers, Mr. Carmack. If you haven’t familiarized yourself with his music yet, do yourself a solid ASAP! RL Grime progresses into a series of ultra-heavy trap beats and a variety of UK-friendly tracks. There’s UK grime, juke, techno, breakbeat, you name it.

What stands out about the selection is RL’s choice of lyrical content. The subject matter of nearly all the songs containing lyrics is about one thing: flourishing. And that’s exactly what Grime, born Henry Steinway is doing. From Drake‘s customarily boastful “Trophies” to the remix of Lil’ Flip‘s nostalgic 2007 rap hit “I’m A Balla (Flip My Chips)”, RL Grime has made it abundantly clear that he’s on top and that he plans to stay there. The only way he’ll do that is if he continues to incorporate a diverse array of styles that are both innovate and appealing to a large audience. Up until this point, he’s proven he is both willing and able to do so. And for that, we tip our hats to him.

Big Rich’s Muhfuggin Mid-Week Mix Vol. 2

Omg it’s here again — Big Rich’s Muhfuggin Mid-Week Mix. I know last week you were all probably incredibly sad that I didn’t post something. Well I’m sorry. My life is busy and I just don’t feel comfortable committing so much time to this relationship so quickly.

But I do feel bad. And because I feel so badly, this week’s mid-week mix is 30 tracks large crossing all sorts of genres, but these tracks all have one thing in common. I picked them for you. They came from my heart.

Literally speaking, they came from my SoundCloud feed, but you know what I’m talking about.

TurtleGravy Tuesday: Sluggers x BLACK GIRL/WHITE GIRL

Sup goonies? I’m pleased to be back for yet another TGT extravaganza! Though it’s becoming increasingly difficult for me to select just one mix to feature every week, I still enjoy the privilege of sharing tubular music with you all. With that, I’d like to present the first of two mixes, Sluggers‘ exclusive Dancing Astronaut Mix.

This isn’t the first we’ve heard from the anonymous Miami techno outfit, and it certainly won’t be the last. As per usual, the Sluggers bring a slew of booty tech bass lines accented with a variety of industrial synths, thumping breakbeat kicks, and hypnotizing hi-hat/sample combos.

Here’s a wicked video they put out last week for their single, “Turbo Fade”.

This is textbook OWSLA behavior—we expected nothing more, nothing less. The label has been releasing EPs from plenty of monochromatic, breaks-heavy artists like Alesia, Wuki,and The Widdler as of late.

Hence, we really have nothing to complain about; this is 47 minutes of unadulterated eargasm. If you’re an up-and-coming DJ, this is the mix you play in public. Props to these guys and/or gals for cooking up a cohesive mix that still appeals to a diverse audience.

Wondering who Sluggers really is? So are we. For all we know, it could be these guys on the decks…

(TurtleTip: As far as I’m concerned, Sluggers could be my dad and his golf buddies. They still tear shit up!)

Our second mix is brought to you by international house duo, BLACK GIRL/WHITE GIRL. Hailing from Amsterdam and Tel Aviv respectively, the self-proclaimed “empresses of house and bass” offer a combination of deep, tropical, funk, and 90s house.

This mix was dedicated to a UK production company Grey Paper Film and features a booty house rendition of Let It Bump by Missy Elliot and Timbaland, only one of countless examples of the influential hip-hop duo’s rekindled popularity over the past year or so.

BG/WG has yet to release any of their own tracks, but their frequent mixes will hold us over for now. They’ve gone on record saying they have a finished album they’re waiting to drop. So be on the lookout!

Aside from the clean, bouncy grooves displayed by the duo, it’s refreshing to see some female talent kicking ass in the EDM world. In an industry that’s seemingly dominated by men, we can only hope that more female acts will surface throughout the year.

As long as they’re absolutely NOTHING like this…(TurtleTip: Believe it or not, mixing requires a lot of dedication and skill. Don’t try to fake it, unless you have a gazillion dollar trust fund or an atrocious public image to dwarf your fraudulence.)
