The HARD Day of the Dead 2014 lineup has officially been announced — not even four weeks after HARD Summer 2014. With almost no time to recuperate, folks around the country are already getting geared up and ready to go for another HARD Presents… event.

As with any lineup announcement, this year’s DOTD is full of surprises. One of the biggest surprise with this lineup is the b2b set with Deadmau5 and Eric Prydz. Although the two first made history earlier this year in Miami with a b2b set at a Miami Music Week club show, the two have yet to perform together in such a huge setting.

Another unexpected treat for this year’s DOTD is the return of Knife Party. As far as HARD events goes, we haven’t seen these two since the very first Day of the Dead (after the name was changed from Hard Haunted Mansion). With multiple “leaks” from their upcoming album, Knife Party’s return to the DOTD stage is going to be one for the books.

One of the biggest surprises for Day of the Dead 2014 is the change in venue. As HARD continues to grow with every year, it requires a bigger venue in order to contain the thousands upon thousands of Los Angeles party-goers.

This year’s DOTD will actually be moving away from the Los Angeles area into Ponoma area where the Los Angeles Fair Grounds (Fairplex) are held. Whether or not this was a last-minute change because of complaints from Whittier Park or if this was something Gary Richards had in mind all along, it seems as though the venue will be large enough to hold this year’s HARD goers and then some.

After not hearing much since the release of his last album, Take You Down, six months back, Bassnectar wholeheartedly reaches out to his fans, sharing some insight into his recent activities. Loren says it best:

” Last fall, while zooming around on tour, I set out to write an album which would really represent my diverse tastes in music. I approached it with a specific and dynamic palette of influences, ideas, preferences, and styles. Sometimes when I hear requests for my “older material” (from someone who only discovered my music relatively recently) or when I hear a comment about a song being “too trap” (as if 808 drums are no longer allowed in music! …when 808 beats have been a part of my production since…1996? 1997?), I think about how far back my musical influences stretch… how multidimensional they are.

I wanted to reach back into all the various corners of those influences (death metal & grindcore… gangster rap… classical… psychedelic rock… techno/ambient… IDM/glitch… downtempo… trip-hop… breakbeat… trance… every vein of electronic music… folk music… big band… jazz…. acid jazz… mushroom jazz… etc etc etc) and I wanted to play the field, like a human pinball bouncing off all the extreme ends and complicated dimensions of my own musical tastes. I wanted to create an album full of music I love. I wanted to have fun, play games, tell jokes. I wanted to make insane bangers, and also to explore deep sonic journeys… and everything in between.

By the end of Summer 2013 I had more than enough music to complete an album, but the songs weren’t really finished. Some of them were crude ideas, and a one in particular was a little track I began in 2002 and never got around to finishing. I decided I wanted to reach out to collaborators (not just other producers, but singer-songwriters, guitarists, pianists, composers, vocalists of all sorts, even entire live bands) and get interactive. By October I had rewritten many songs into a unique format: no drums. no bass. I reduced all the wobbles and lasers and synths and sound FX into basic chords: piano, guitar… maybe some simple background accompaniment. I sent them out to all kinds of people, mostly vocalists or composers, and asked them to write to it, riff over it, mash it up… see what came back. By the end of Fall Tour, I had almost enough music for an entire album that sounded like some weird indie rock band… still no beats, and no bass. I spent the rest of the year recording new ideas, sitting with vocalists and writing lyrics… playing guitar and piano and constantly remixing and transforming the ideas… just trying to see what would come up.

In January I started taking these songs and “remixing” them, as if they were songs by some other band, and I was hired to do a remix. I treated them like an Ellie Goulding song, or a Deftones song… I ripped them apart, cut them up beyond recognition, and added tons of weight, heaviness, filth, noise, beats, basslines, sound effects etc, often winding up with multiple versions of each song. On almost every individual song, I would act like some manic Goldilocks character – alternating back and forth between the extremes “this song is too hot, this song is too cold” trying to get everything “just right”.

Being off the road is weird. I’ve never had a 6 month break before… not since I was in college and throwing nonstop full moon parties and renegade warehouse raves, and trying to save the world

I’ve spent a lot of time hiking and enjoying nature, reconnecting with my friends, being invisible and relaxed… but most of my time has been spent working obsessively. I’ve worked a 13+ hour shift, 7 days a week, almost every single day this year. And I’ve collaborated with so many people that many days are spent with 5 computers in front of me, on the phone with New York, with Atlanta, with Chicago, with Denver, with Los Angeles ….losing my mind and losing myself in music.

Now I need to decide: what the fuck am I gonna do, how do I ‘finish’ this story… 26 tracks… gotta pick 13… gotta choose which ones make the cut, and which order they will appear in… don’t wanna leave anything out, don’t wanna under-represent any particular direction… want to make something that feels just right… mostly, I just want to make something I love. And share it with you later this year!

I’m sure I will get a single or two out soon, ideally before the summer… but it’s hard to release one slice of the cake when each slice is so different and unique…

Oddly, as much as I look forward to delighting you with this, I don’t care if you don’t like it. Or if you wish it was more like this, or less like that, or not enough this, or too much that. I don’t care!
I’m making what I love, and I feel so grateful when I look ahead at all the amazing opportunities I will get this year to play these songs – and remix them and reinvent them – at live shows…

One of the best parts about this time off the road is being disconnected from the internet… not checking Twitter or Facebook. I kept feeling the reflex to check in, say hi, etc… but it’s just simply too deliciously fucking wonderful to not be plugged in. I have a personal goal of spending as little time as possible online this year…. ha, we will see how it goes (wish me luck).

But I’ll be seeing you all soon out on the road, just wanted to give you a little update on where my mind is, and what I’ve been up to.

Hope you are healthy and happy,”

Lorin

As Bassnectar continues to fine tune his eagerly-awaited album release sometime this year, bassheads alike will be happy to know that Lorin is still doing his thing, pushing the envelope as always.

The day begun under the Arizona sun with a collection of local artists from all around the state. While the park stayed pretty desolate for the first few hours, we had no trouble getting down and dirty with some of AZ’s finest (and hugely under appreciated) talent.

The Black Moods kicked off the festivities, and laid down a grungy, 90’s-esque set, while members of Wiz Khalifa’s Taylor Gang, Berner and Chevy Woods drew the other half of the crowd to their side of the park with their consecutive rap sets. We were lucky enough to run into lead man of the Black Moods Josh Kennedy, who was more than happy to share his sentiments on TMF.

JNTM : How did you get in contact with TMF? Was it tough to get a spot?

Josh : “Yeah, we came to them. We had to fight tooth and claw to get in here—And we’re the ones playing right when the gates open”.

JNTM : That being said, what do you think of the festival as a whole?

Josh : “Oh, well it’s a great vibe in here already, it’s great!”

These Zeppelin and Creedence influenced rockers have been playing the AZ venue circuit for a while, and it seemed that they were happy to break into the world of festivals. Oh, and of course they were willing to take some glamour shots with us.

The nine-piece, “Gypsy Funk” group Dry River Yacht Club was up next, and having seen them a time or two already alongside He’s My Brother, She’s My Sister, we thought we knew what we were in for. Lead hottie Garnet and her motley assortment of musicians gave us a huge-sounding, trippy and completely unique experience. Somewhere in between the oboe, the violin, and the sultry vocals, we fell in love. After their set, we flagged them down to see what they had to say about their music and the festival.

JNTM : “You guys have an incredibly unique style. How did you all come together to create the Dry River Yacht Club?”

Fred : “All of us are like one big group of producers—It’s like working on one big piece of wood, we all bring something to the table and widdle away at it.”

JNTM : “So how has your experience with True Music Festival been so far?”

Garnet : “We’re so proud to be playing here alongside such great acts. He’s My Brother, she’s My Sister, The Flaming Lips? Awesome.”

As the day progressed, things only got more diverse, and exponentially more massive. Lord Huron’s hippie-folk vibe flowed perfectly into the smooth, almost lounge-style rock of Black Carl on the other side of the field, and kept us moving until the big names began to arrive.

After a long few hours of rock in the hot sun, nothing was quite as refreshing as GRiZ’s funky, saxophone-accentuated set. He laid down a medley of songs off of his new and critically acclaimed album Rebel Era, such as “Getting Live”, as well as the James Brown-influenced “DTW to DIA”, remembering of course to drop his collaboration track with Grammatik, “Digital Liberation is Mad Freedom”, sprinkling little sax solos whenever possible.

About midway through GRiZ’s set, people began to turn their heads to the sky to see the colorful parachutes begin making their way down towards the festival. The skydivers continued to roll in through his set, and into Capital Cities.

We were wary of Capital Cities at first. After all, all we had known were a few of their most poppy tracks, such as “Safe and Sound” and “I Sold My Bed, But Not My Stereo”, and we half-expected a somewhat boring, clap-your-hands pop set. Instead, we got some thick and groovy funk sounds, with all the goofy nonchalant-ness of Chromeo, and the musical prowess and diversity of Breakbot. They even gave us a slowed-down, soulful rendition of the BeeGee’s “Stayin’ Alive” that had us spinning and snapping like a couple of dudes right out of the late 70’s.

Sweaty from a couple hours of dancing and mingling with the Scottsdale folk, we traversed the field once again to feel the folky sounds of both The Kopecky Family Band and He’s My Brother, She’s My Sister. Although HMB, SMS was missing their trademark lead woman, they had a medley of female vocalists cycle through their set in what they called “A big game of musical chairs”.

Stoner sensation Wiz Khalifa went on next, and as the night began to get cold (who knew it actually gets cold in Scottsdale?) everyone flocked to the main stage to watch him and his band do their thing. He laid down hit after hit, from party anthem “Young, Wild, and Free” to “Black and Yellow”, and although his set was in every way opposite of the few before him, everyone seemed to get down without missing a beat. It seemed that everyone had a certain act that they had come especially for, and for many of the people there, it was Wiz.

Next up, on the opposite end of the musical spectrum, but the same stage, The Flaming Lips went on, bringing their trademark freaky sounds and stunning visuals with them. Lead man (and legend) Wayne Coyne stood atop a pile of massive silver spheres adorned with rope lights directly in the center of the stage (and he cradled a baby doll through the majority of his set, because sure, why not?). After playing variety of songs both new and old, and dazzling the crowd with their huge and all-encompassing light show, Coyne and the gang touched some hearts with “Do you Realize?”, and finished off their set leaving people dazed and confused on their walk over to Kill Paris.

Another polar opposite, Kill Paris brought some funky and heavy electro-beats to the table, playing fun remixes, and raising our heart rates for the big man himself, Bassnectar.

After seeing Wiz Khalifa and The Flaming Lips, I had come to a realization about TMF. What I thought was directionless scheduling before was actually a cleverly-designed lineup designed to attract people of all walks of life. They actually scheduled three different headliners with three completely different styles and fans. Still, the same people who were awe-stricken at the Flaming Lips were right up front, getting weird with Bassnectar.

Now, we had recently had a Bassnectar experience at HARD Summer, and it was interesting to see how his set had evolved since then. It seemed he had mellowed out his set slightly to accommodate the types of people who may have not been die-hard electronic music fans. Either way, he still brought it insanely hard with heavy tracks like “Raw Charles”, and left us at the perfect point for the end of the festival—exhausted, confused, and grinning like children.

The True Music Festival Experience was weird, definitely. That, however, did not subtract from the fact that the festival was one of the most interesting experiences we’ve seen in music. From the added perks of picking up a VIP pass (Skydiving, exclusive areas, ect) to the seemingly clashy lineup, True Music Festival definitely took a few big risks for their debut show. Fortunately for them, it paid off in what seemed to be a very successful and universally enjoyed experience. We’re glad they invited us there to show their stuff, and if we’re lucky, we’ll be there next year to see what’s changed.

With the True Music Festival less than 24 hours away and the set times released, it’s time to pack up the car, put on your festival pants, and make those difficult decisions: Who are the must-sees on the lineup?

Luckily for you, we’ve done our research so you won’t have to.

That being said, seeing everyone you want to at the festival shouldn’t be very difficult. There are only two stages, and the time slots are staggered in such a way that only a few stressful decisions need to be made. Is that going to stop us from telling you about all the artists you’re about to see? Of course not.

The Black Moods / Dry River Yacht Club / Black Bottom Lighters

Getting to the show early? You should. Those who have the enthusiasm to wake up early and get to the festival by 11 will have two choices for the first few hours of their experience. Between 11 and 1 on the main stage, two rap artists, Berner and Chevy Woods will be throwing down trap beats and solid rhymes to start the day. If that’s not your style, then head over to the Solar Stage, where a trio of rock-based bands will be playing.

The Black Moods are the first band of the day to preform, and if 90’s style grunge rock is your thing, then you’ll enjoy kicking off the day with this grungy trio.

Dry River Yacht Club goes on shortly after. If you like weird, yet suspiciously arousing female vocals, funky and peculiar instruments, and a big, loud sound, you can’t miss these guys.

Black Bottom Lighters are a good ‘ol fashioned ska group. Ripping solos, fast beats, and horn parts will give plenty of reason to jump around for their 25 minute set.

Black Carl is the next group we’ve set our sights on. These local Arizonans have been playing around the state for a while now, and if you haven’t gotten a taste of their sultry blues vibe, it’s about time. Their presence on stage is overwhelmingly fun, and if they’re not melting your heart with some thick blues, they’re making you move with funky riffs and beats. Don’t get caught missing these guys.

GRiZ is quite possibly the act that we are most looking forward to for Saturday. After his latest release, Rebel Era, GRiZ has grown in popularity quite a bit, and we expect him to pull more than a few tricks out of his sleeve. GRiZ is famous for mixing sexy guitar riff samples, soulful vocal bits, and funk solos with heavy electronic style beats. It’s sure to be one of the most exciting shows of the day, and a great opportunity to get warmed up for the day. GRiZ goes on at 3:05, and there’s no one else in that time slot, so unless you spend his entire set in the bathroom or something, we’ll see you there.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/86436922″ params=”color=1b67db&auto_play=false&show_artwork=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

You may not recognize Capital Cities by their name, but there is at least a 90% chance that you’ve heard Safe and Sound more than a few times. This poppy electronic duo will keep you smiling and bouncing up and down for the entirety of their hour-long set. If you miss them at the after party tonight, then we recommend catching these guys, if only to add some variety to your schedule.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/8813997″ params=”color=1b67db&auto_play=false&show_artwork=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

He’s My Brother, She’s My Sister is a five piece folk-rock group that just oozes personality. From the upright bass to the hot female tap-dance-drummer (she tap-dances on a giant bass drum while hitting other drums with mallets, it’s truly a sight to behold), to the male/female harmonies, HmB, SmS is a massively entertaining and fun group that will have you slow dancing with your partner one moment, and jumping up and down the next.

The Flaming Lips have been praised for having one of the most entertaining live performances out there. Their soulful indie vibe will give you some time to stop, collect yourself, and experience some feelings. Their lead man, Wayne Coyne, has become notorious for his performance at Coachella, in which he put himself into a massive plastic bubble, and surfed around the crowd. Will he do it again? Maybe! Will the show be good either way? Yes.

We’ve been paying attention to OWSLA’s new recruit Kill Paris for quite some time now, and with his solid list of hits, remixes, and collaborative tracks, KP is likely to be one of the most energetic sets of the evening. Although his set is only a short 35 minutes, his heavy electronic beats and wubs, at the very least, will be a perfect warm up for…

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/108692251″ params=”color=1b67db&auto_play=false&show_artwork=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

Bassnectar. The godfather of EDM himself, Lorin Ashton has been laying down thick and weird dubstep since the 90’s, making us dance and confusing our parents for as long as we can remember. The last time we’ve had a Bassnectar experience was at HARD Summer, and we expect his performance at TMF to be no less devastating. Get ready for trippy, philosophical visuals, a dazzling light show, and music that will make you dance in a way that you didn’t know you could.

All in all, the lineup for TMF is diverse, strange, and absolutely massive. We’re thrilled to see how the festival pulls all of this off, and we’ll be on the scene for every minute of it.

See you there.

Snow blankets the streets, mistletoe adorns the doorways of college kids, and that guy dressed in red is ringing that damn bell outside of Wal-Mart for the Salvation Army. Merriment and peace fill the streets like car exhaust on your Monday morning commute. Truly, this is a magical time for all. Having said that, it’s time to get out of the dumb and cold place that you live and head for Scottsdale. That’s right—The True Music Festival is coming.

As you may have noticed, we’ve been keeping a pretty close eye on this festival, and with good reason. With big names like Bassnectar and Griz, how could we not? As the 14th creeps closer like your bogus sedan sliding down an icy road, the fellas over at TMF continue to reveal more details that are both thrilling and perplexing.

From the beginning, the festival has offered several types of tickets, ranging from the run-of-the-mill GA passes to the upscale, Scottsdale-style TRUEVIP pass. Until recently, there wasn’t much reason to make the upgrade from regular VIP to TRUEVIP; that is, until they released a key bit of information.

According to a recent Facebook post, TRUEVIP pass owners will have the ability to skydive into the festival. Seriously.

That’s not even the extent of the madness. Once inside, TRUEVIP members will be treated with a personal cocktail waitress, a personal menu with catering provided by Arizona’s finest chefs, and, oh yes, an executive bathroom.

Can’t quite afford the VIP treatment? That’s okay, neither can we, but if you’re an ASU student, you have about 8 hours left to cash in on a special promo code that’ll shave $20 off the top of your GA ticket. (The code is ASUTMF, but you didn’t hear it from us).

On top of all this, the festival has announced a first-come, first-serve pre-party with a DJ set from Capital Cities on the night of the 13th, at the INTL Champagne bar / Boutique Nightclub. TMF promises an intimate experience with one of the biggest acts of the festival, so don’t miss it.

The guys over at TMF aren’t pulling any punches for this debut, and with the ferocious lineup, we’re expecting nothing short of an explosively good time.

The True Music Festival will be gracing the valley for the first time on the 14th, and the JNTM crew will be there, keeping you updated on each and every funky detail. Until then, follow them on the proper social media sites, get your tickets, and swoop up those TRUEVIP skydiving passes before it’s too late. We’ll be on the ground, waiting for you.

Zak is a Junior at Norther Arizona University and when he’s not dancing his ass off at a show he enjoys a little bit of everything. A jack of all trades, Zak enjoys to create — music, videos, or whatever! Zak is a master barista and likes making coffee for people.

We caught up with Zak to find out a little bit more about one of our new contributors.

JNTM: Who are some of your favorite producers right now?

Zak: I’m really into GRiZ right now, Breakbot is a favorite of mine, [as well as] Oliver. Anything with some funk in there.

JNTM: If you could see any DJ/artist perform live, who would it be?

Zak: I missed Gesaffelstien at HARD Summer, and I’ve been getting into him lately. So, that’s the first thing that comes to mind. Wouldn’t mind seeing Dillon Francis again soon either.

JNTM: What’s the last show/festival you went to? Who was your favorite artist there?

Zak: HARD Day of the Dead. And this is a tough question; with so many artists, it’s tough. However, Pretty Lights really vibed with me in a surprising way. The groovy subtleties in his set really got me moving. Jack Beats was also surprisingly heavy.

JNTM: What are some genres you really like and some you really hate? Any that you hate you like?

Zak: For a long time, I was the guy who fully denounced electronic music. I saw a lack of live instruments as a huge weakness in the music, like so many people do. It wasn’t until I discovered the emotion and creativity that can be unlocked with the limitless sort of potential that EDM provides that I fell in love.

That being said, I still have an affinity for live instruments fused with electronic music. GRiZ’s Rebel Era is a perfect embodiment of this. Funk, groove, soul.

But hey, who doesn’t like to go hard? Dog Blood, Bassnectar, Zomboy, ect…

Hate? I’d have to go with trance. I can stick with it for a few minutes, but 8 minutes into the same beat, and I get bored. Maybe that makes me an uncultured neanderthal, I don’t know.

Hate that I like? I’ve heard it called “brostep”; That slow, 1-2 beat that Skrillex is all about. Entry-level? Maybe. Dope? Probably.

JNTM: If you could produce a track or DJ with any producer who would it be and why?

Zak: As far as him musical prowess, I’m not sure, but It’d be an absolute riot to spend a day with Dillon Francis. Ooh, or Gary Richards (Destructo). That guy knows everything.

Want to join Zak on the JNTM team? Send us a message on Facebook and we’ll be in touch!

True Music Festival is a brand new, multi-genre music festival making its debut this winter in Scottsdale, Arizona at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick Resort. The festival, which will be taking place on December 14, 2013, is already packing some major heat in terms of headlining artists.

First on the list is the always eccentric and EDM favorite, Bassnectar. With his new album out and Immersive Music Tour already underway, Bassnectar will be wrapping up his year by bringing his huge sound and incredible light show to the Scottsdale area.

The next headliner is one of the most influential and genre-bending bands in rock ‘n’ roll: The Flaming Lips. The three-time Grammy award winning band is known not only for some of the most thematic tracks ever written, but more importantly for their amazing live shows including elaborate costuming and visuals, and lots of toilet paper. Don’t forget about Wayne Coyne crowd surfing in a a giant balloon.

The next big name to take the stage at the True Music Festival is hip hop mogul Wiz Khalifa. Khalifa, who has also been busy with an international tour, is sure to be a huge bringer for hip-hop fans across Arizona. Wiz is best known for his tracks “Black and Yellow,” “Young Wild & Free,” and “No Sleep.”

Sticking to their motto of having a “multi-genre” music festival, the final two artists on the headliner list give attendees a true blend of indie and folk rock. Capital Cities, known best for their smash dance single “Safe and Sound,” and Lord Huron who have been making waves in the indie community since 2010, will be bringing the perfect mix of grooviness to an already stacked lineup.

First tier general admission tickets are on sale now, while VIP and other packages will be available within the next coming weeks.

Be sure to check back soon for more information on additional artists, tickets, and more!
