Phoenix, Arizona could be the next place to establish the newest up-and-coming festival destination in the country. With Las Vegas hosting EDC‘s largest U.S. installment and southern California being the home of both Coachella and HARD Summer, it seems as only a matter of time before Phoenix taps into the festival market. The Valley of the Sun is preparing to host the first annual Phoenix Lights Festival on March 22nd, rounding off their headliner announcement with a star-studded cast of performers. The event’s inaugural bill will be lead by Hardwell, Robin Schulz, Route 94, Lane 8, and most recently confirmed, Canadian bass gods Zeds Dead.

Although the full roster of acts has yet to be announced, Phoenix Lights is already promising a colorful variety of performances from some of dance music’s most sought-after performers. The newly announced event is promising to bring leading-edge designs, interactive art, and vibrant lighting displays to the mix. Lead by a very impressive list of headliners, Phoenix Lights is gearing up to deliver what could grow into the next big west coast event.

I know what you might be thinking: “great, another Lorde remix…” Sure, the number of Lorde remixes out right now is absurd. But leave it to Australian wunderkind, Flume, to produce a track that stands head and shoulders (and knees and toes) above the rest.

Both artists performed at Coachella this year. And your boy just so happened to be there Weekend One to witness the Aussie slay the new tricked out Gobi tent that Friday night.

The crowd lost their shit when he played this track, so it was only a matter of time before an official release hit the interwebs.

As always, Flume remains on top of the game. Anyone who claims this won’t be the case for some time is sorely mistaken. Be sure to peep some of his other anthems on Soundcloud.

Miami based production duo Urban Noize pays homage to OutKast‘s 20th anniversary of being a group with their remix EP project Everlastin‘. Urban Noize explains how they simply wanted to commemorate “the impact they’ve had in music.” Steve goes on explaining, “all while introducing some of their classics in refreshing ways, to a younger generation that may not be familiar to them.”

With Coachella opening it’s doors today, and OutKast booked for 40 festival dates this year, this EP is a perfect way to celebrate and get hyped. The EP is a boundary blend of soulful electro inspirations meshed with the iconic hip-hop veterans’ unparalleled sound.

Back for it’s fourth year and less than 100 days away, Governors Ball Music festival is taking place on June 6, 7 and 8 at Randall’s Island, NYC.

Personally, I think the lineup for this years Governors Ball absolutely kills it. It ranges from EDM to hip-hop to old school rock. The lineup includes headliners such as Outkast (who is also headlining Coachella), Jack White, Vampire Weekend, The Strokes, and others such as Swedish House Mafia’s Axwell and Sebastian Ingrosso, Phoenix, Disclosure, Skrillex, Foster the People, Empire of the Sun (who headlined Governors Ball back at the first festival in 2011), Spoon, and many many more!

To all my fellow east coasters, I HIGHLY suggest you purchase your ticket before they sell out! This is one music festival you DO NOT want to miss! For everyone else, if you haven’t been to NYC, this is the perfect opportunity for you to come visit the glorious humidity of the east!

Last week

I’ve resorted back to my nasty trap habits, and I came across two mixes that really got me all hot and bothered. The first of which is is Flosstradamus‘s long-awaited BNNED 3D Mixtape. It’s 2014 and these guys no longer require any sort of intro. So just listen, would ya?

The third installment of Flossy‘s BNNED series is characterized by the Chicago duo’s unwavering taste for twerk-friendly party music and massive festie trap, the same brands of music that sent the #HDYBYZ to the forefront of the global trap explosion and earned them a spot on this year’s Coachella lineup.

If you ever find yourself on Greek Row without any recollection of when or how you got there, be sure to put this mix on. It’s short, sweet, and will allot you just enough time to either escape or stay and do something so utterly PLURNT you’ll be considered a pledge class legend for centuries to come.

The second of the two mixes is THUGLI’s BBCR1 Diplo & Friends Mix. I wasn’t all too familiar with the Canadian duo prior to this week. But it appears as if trapmania has found its way into the tender hands of our brothers to the north. And lo and behold, they’re absolutely slaying the genre!

THUGLI, comprised of Pat Drastik and Tom Wrecks, take eclecticism to a whole new level, utilizing tracks by everyone from Purity Ring to Pusha T to Ta-ku to Araabmuzik; they even manage to toss in plenty of their own originals and remixes.

This mix is perfect for impressing that cute raver fairy chick that met at HARD Summer. She looooves hula hooping but haaaates the Harlem Shake. THUGLI falls somewhere in the middle, allowing her to manifest her oneness with the universe but still get a little buckwild.

It’s no secret that Australian lovetrap duo, What So Not, has teamed up with the crown prince of EDM, Sonny “Skrillex” Moore, for a much anticipated collaboration. The buzz surrounding a Skrill So Not (as the internet has dubbed it) project surfaced in March 2013 after Sonny posted an Instagram photo of himself in the studio with WSN member Flume. We’re willing to bet the above track is bound to appear on said collab upon its release.

Chalk it up to coincidence, but Skrillz just so happened to drop this joint in What So Not’s own backyard during his set at the acclaimed Beachlife Music Festival. Could this be a message from the EDM gods? It’s only a matter of time before our prayers are answered and the prophecy is fulfilled…

P.S. both Skrillex and Flume are on the bill for Coachella this year sooo there’s that.

Friday night, international trapstars and frequent Yeezus collaborators, TNGHT, released a brief video entitled “Waning Moon” which may or may not imply an indefinite hiatus.

The video is an ominous depiction of the group members Hudson Mohawke and Lunice performing live peppered with flickering images of menacing storm clouds and their trademark crescent moon. It ends with a clip of the two producer/DJs  saying thanks as they close out their HARD Summer set with OutKast‘s “Int’l Players Anthem”.

The YouTube clip was released with a message that reads “Until Next We Meet” which many speculate is a clear indication of a permanent split. That would seem logical had Lunice not tweeted just hours after the video went up:

There’s a difference between a break up and quality control. Think about it.

Plot twist: it’s not a breakup. Then what in Yeezus’ name is it? And is it final? The tagline does sort of suggest that we will be seeing more from the trap lords in the future.

We got to experience TNGHT at both Coachella and HARD Summer, as if we weren’t already fascinated by their dark, innovative approach to instrumental hip hop. The group is revered for combining their heavy hitter trap sound with intense minimalist visuals during their live performances, making them one of our favorite acts to watch in 2013. It’s safe to say we were quite concerned upon hearing the rumors.

But let’s all just calm down for like five seconds and think this one through, okay?

Canadian-born Lunice and his Glaswegian parter in crime, HudMo, are clearly still on the rise— this summer they produced tracks for Kanye’s tour de force and there have been talks of a Watch the Throne 2 collab. Not to mention, they have yet to produce a full-length album of any sort. Nevertheless, they threw some of the most mesmerizing sets of the past year.

Could “Waning Moon” just be a brief pause in the seemingly overnight rise to stardom of two EDM underdogs? Or perhaps the symbolic end of an era, giving rise to a new incarnation of the TNGHT project christened TMRRW? Or maybe it’s the duo’s way of reining in the new year with some of that “y’all ain’t ready for this 2014 next level type shit”. Like when all your friends stop eating Ben & Jerry’s and wear matching tanks to the gym on January 1st (though a boastful New Year’s Twitter Resolution doesn’t quite seem like TNGHT’s style).

Regardless, we’re all waiting anxiously to see what other information will surface in regards to the group’s whereabouts whether they remain a group or not. Be sure to comment and let us know what your thoughts are regarding the message behind “Waning Moon”.
