Anyone who said moombahton has had its day is dead wrong. The latin-inspired sub-genre seemed to be garnering some steam in years past, but has since slowed down and become more a niche sound for fine-tuned tastes, positioned somewhere between dance hall and house music. Now however, moombahton may be making a comeback, with the likes of Dillon Francis announcing a full moombahton EP this year, and and DJ Snake and Skrillex weighing in on the genre’s return.

Previewed in a short Youtube video, perhaps from Holy Ship!’s second sailing this past week, Skrillex drops the syrupy 110bpm tune alongside his Parisian collaborator. The tune is far from what you’d expect from Skrill, packing in high-frequency lead synths, complete with latin-inspired, shoulder-shaking tribal drum work. DJ Snake even took to twitter to confirm the tune, alluding to a first-listen that may be sooner than we all think.

@ShotsLotta soon

— DJ SNAKE (@djsnake) February 22, 2015

Snake, known to be charmingly concise, assures fans in all of one whole word that one of the biggest collaborations of the year will be available to eager fans before we know it. Without a release date or even a name to go by, it looks like its a waiting game from here, although it may be a lot shorter than people think. Stay tuned.

Grabbing the attention and full support of Diplo, the New York City-based duo, TWRK, has undoubtedly created heavy trap beats to keep you in a replay loop. Composed of Benzi and Esentrik, the duo has transformed Diplo & GTA’s original “Boy Oh Boy” into their personal moombahton production with trap-infused elements. With the added vocals in play, the dirty beat drives through as the moombahton takes control entirely. This incredibly fresh remix has been released for free, so stream below and grab your very own free download. Enjoy!

I don’t remember exactly how I came about finding Banginclude, but I do remember his music having an immediate impact on me. I remember being blown away by this combination of hip hop, trap, moombahton, and world music which I soon discovered was called “Zouk Bass.”

After doing some more digging, I found that Banginclude had been featured on Mad Decent and had some incredible remixes of DJ Snake, LOUDPVCK, and Nadastrom.

I was able to ask Banginclude some questions about his background, taste in music, and his thoughts on EDM. What I got in return was an extensive look inside what I think will be one of the biggest new artists behind one the biggest new genres of the year.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/124979592″ params=”color=ff6600&auto_play=false&show_artwork=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

Just Noise To Me: Who was the first electronic artist that you listened to that made you want to start producing/DJing? Who still inspires you to this day?

Banginclude: Oddly enough it was a band that inspired me to start making music — Yo La Tengo. They made some of the most beautiful and passionate music and did it for the love of their craft, not to get rich or anything like that. Listening to them really made me understand how powerful it is to make music. So i started making it.

Today, I’m all over the place. Moombahton is definitely my favorite. I’m into anything that has a ton of groove and has a party feel to it. Lovin’ Zouk Bass as well. Zouk Bass has really opened me up to a lot of different styles from Portugal and Africa. One guy that I’ve really been feeling is Nigga Fox.

Also, DZC is a crew from Portugal, they make some really good music, very sexy stuff. On the American side of things, Champion Rocka is killin’ it in the Moombah scene. Grandtheft is consistently puttin’ out fire. Dunno, so much good stuff comin out. Been listenin’ to a lot of hip hop. That Cali Hyphy and Jerk stuff… too fun not to listen to.

JNTM: Give us some background on yourself and your history working in music.

B: I don’t play any instruments. Growing up a lot of my friends were in bands so I was always around music and going to shows and stuff. I started off making music on the computer. I was always good with computers so it seemed a natural fit.

For work these days I work at a DJ and production school. Along with working and making music, I’m studying how to infiltrate this music scene

JNTM: What do you think the hardest thing is about getting started/getting your name out there, etc?

B: There’s so much music out there… and a ton of great music. It’s crazy, you dig through SoundCloud and you hear amazing next level tracks that have only a few plays.

Its upsetting at times seeing this, but the thing is nowadays, part of being an artist is getting your name out there for yourself. We have to spend time figuring out ways to get people to listen to our music and more than that, get the right people listening.

Luckily a lot of the right people are on social media, so it’s pretty easy to figure out what they’re looking for.

JNTM: Describe what Zouk/Zouk Bass is. How did you get into producing this genre of music and where do you think it’s going? Do you think Zouk will have a big year in 2014?

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/83413395″ params=”color=ff6600&auto_play=false&show_artwork=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

B: Zouk Bass seems to be loosely based on the down tempo flavors of Zouk: Tarraxo, Tarrachina, Kizomba. Usually Zouk Bass tracks fall in the 85-100 BPM range.

In most dance genres, there is a specific beat that somewhat dictates the genre. For example with Moombahton, you have the dembow, with Dubstep you have the dub or reggea rhythm… Zouk Bass has a few since there are many flavors of Zouk.

One of the strengths of ZB is that most of the artists producing Zouk have an original sound to their productions. I never thought about it before but you could actually make sub genres for each artist putting out ZB tracks.

For instance, you have someone like Insane Fennel whose stuff is super soundtrack-esque, JSTJR, whose stuff has this laid back, grind feel to it. DJ Riots stuff whose stuff is just crazy, but slays the dance floor…

Me, for the most part I try to focus on the groove and make something that will fit in at parties I play.

As for success for the genre in 2014, I think it will keep evolving nicely. There are a couple big projects that I am aware of that which in which Zouk Bass is the lead role.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/113350636″ params=”color=ff6600&auto_play=false&show_artwork=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

JNTM: What’s one of the biggest moments you had in 2013? What do you look forward to in 2014?

B: Ill say just as a whole I’m into small goals, so things like working with different artists that i respect, hearing from people that enjoy my music, being part of compilations…

A bunch of up and coming producers and myself started a crew (Globetrotters Crew) and put together and released a pretty darn good compilation,( Global Bass Allstars vol 1). That was pretty awesome.

Just this past month myself and a bunch of other NYC artists started a collective, Tempo NYC. We plan on promoting local and like-minded artists as well as pushing global bass here in NY. Our first event is coming up soon. Just gotta keep things fresh.

JNTM: Who are some of your favorite artists right now? EDM or not.

B: I listen to a lot of different music these days. Been really into a lot of the stuff comin’ out of Africa, E.L. is nuts, Sarkodie is a pretty sick MC w a real nasty flow, love most of the stuff that Principe Disco puts out. Ckrono and Slesh are always puttin’ out next level stuff on the global front. Ape Drums is super nasty. The Pack, they’re broken up but still great stuff and is super relevant now. So much great stuff out there.

JNTM: The EDM culture as a whole has been growing exponentially over the past few years — what are your thoughts on that? Do you think it’s a good thing or potentially a bad thing?

B: There’s good and bad to everything. One good is that there is more of an audience for these styles. That means more opportunity. Bad is that its being monetized, anytime lots of money is involved intentions shift a bit in favor of money and art suffers.

JNTM: What do your parents think of you being a producer/DJ? Are they caught up on the culture and do they understand/support what you’re doing?

B: I got real lucky in that I have amazing parents who support me with anything I do. I could play my mother me burping with a beat behind it and she would tell me its the best song in the world. My dad is cool with it as well. He sees that I love doing this and that is all he can ask for.

JNTM: If you could have any other profession other than producing/djing what would it be and why?

B: Maybe porn? Prob wouldnt do it if it came down to it but thats really the only thing I can think of right now. Def something where I’m not in an office or driving.

Seven Lions is back with another massive track named “Serpent Of Old”. Combined with the gothic vocals of Ciscandra Nostalghia, Seven Lions pounds away with monstrous, melodic bass and trance elements, showing how he is distinguishable from other producers. He takes a dark turn from his previous summer release, “Strangers” (with Myon & Shane 54), where he introduces progressive house as he did with “Polarized” from his Polarize EP, back in 2012. He is creating variation with these latest releases, although the euphoric and melodic ambiance he is known for plays an unmistakable role in this new track, as well as his previous one. Stay tuned for updates on his future releases and EP’s.

2013 has been an incredible year for EDM festivals across the world. There were more EDM acts at Coachella then ever before, EDC was a massive success (compared to last year’s epic fail), and HARD Summer had yet another completely sold out weekend. With so many awesome sets there could only be a few that stood above the rest. Below is our countdown of the Top 5 Live Sets of 2013. Enjoy!

5. A-Trak Live at Electriz Zoo

Despite the festival being shut down early due to drug related incidents, Electric Zoo still had some of the best artists in the world together for hours of EDM. Easily one of the best performances of the festival was Fool’s Gold co-owner and world class DJ, A-Trak. Mixing and scratching were only part of this set, as A-Trak played a set that was completely all over the place in terms of genres and artists. From Oliver to DJ Snake, this set was covered end to end with hits from all over the EDM spectrum. “Big Bad Wolf” and other songs that would later be released on Duck Sauce’s Duck Tape EP were some of the songs that brought the funk to A-Trak’s set. A special reworking of Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky” was also featured, along with a track from JNTM favorite Sleepy Tom. What A-Trak set would be complete without “Heads Will Roll”? A-Trak completed his set with infamous remix along with over a minute of intense scratching that got this DJ to wear he is today.

4. Hardwell Live at Ultra

One of the biggest names in the festival circuit world wide, Hardwell had yet another unbelievable set at this year’s Ultra Music Festival in Miami, Florida. Known as one of the biggest names in Dutch Progressive/Electro House, Hardwell is more than just the #1 DJ in the world according to DJ Mag’s Top 100. With incredibly consistency, Hardwell completely destroyed the stage at Ultra, involving the crowd as much as possible. The best part of Hardwell’s set was his ability to combine so many songs together. Using samples from Daft Punk’s “Harder Better Faster Stronger” and Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” Hardwell does a fantastic job of turning out song after song full of bounce and energy. The coolest part about this set was the fact that Hardwell played right as the sun was going down in Miami Beach. With an incredible sunset as his backdrop, the show quickly went from a day time rave to a night time party.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/83846454″ width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

Hardwell: Facebook // Twitter // SoundCloud

3. Clockwork Live at EDC

Alter ego of Trap superstar R.L. Grime, Clockwork is another name to have risen to the top this year. With his incredibly high energy and strictly Big Room repertoire, Clockwork was a perfect fit for this year’s EDC. Los Angeles based producer proved his chops to the festival circuit this year, especially with this live set from the Electric Daisy Carnival in Las Vegas, Nevada. Throwing in a couple Trap breakdowns and Moombahton beats thrown into the mix, Clockwork had a perfect blend of original tracks as well as crowd favorites. With consumers jumping from genre to genre, it’ll be interesting to see how Henry Steinway performs in 2014, and whether he’ll favor his festival favorite Clockwork alias, or heavy Trap god R.L. Grime.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/98568848″ width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

Clockwork: Facebook // Twitter // SoundCloud

2. Dillon Francis Live at HARD Summer

Starting his set off with Daft Punk’s “Doin’ it Right,” this set was nonstop hit after hit. Shouting things like, “If you ain’t down with Moombahton, you’re at the wrong stage,” and “This is seriously one of the most special experiences in my entire life,” this set was more than just a mix. It was a heartfelt live performance by one of the fastest growing artists in the EDM community right now. Playing classic Dillon Francis hits along with some throwback Hip Hop jams and never-before-heard remixes, this set was an incredible combination of the past, present, and future of music. Some notable moments include a special appearance by Flosstradamus (who, along with Dillon make up “Dillstradamaus“) and a short clip of “Forever Young” by Alphaville.

After the release of their two-track EP, no one really knew what to expect of the super group comprised of Skrillex and Boys Noize. This hour long set proved to everyone that these two were onto something huge. Dropping tracks from their respective labels along with tracks that would later appear on the group’s next EP, this live set is packed with hard hitting, never-before-heard tunes. Ranging from Big Room House, to Acid Bass/German Techno, to Trap, to some super dirty Dubstep, this Dog Blood set set the bar HIGH for other festival performers. Dog Blood would spend the rest of the year playing festivals all over the world, melting faces at every stop.

This would be his second EP of the year; the first being Blow the Roof released back on the 28th of January.

Starting off with a collaboration with Steve Aoki, “Steve French“, you can feel Steve’s influence as they create this refreshing electro dubstep tune.

Flux takes us back to his classic dubstep and bass roots with “Gold Love” and “Mountains and Molehills“, featuring the fantastic vocal work from Rosie Oddie and Turin Brakes, respectively.

The much anticipated collaboration with Dillon Francis, “I’m the One“, gives the jumpy moombahton side from Dillon mixed with their collective dubstep vibe, creating an addictive track that will have fans pressing replay for days.

Finishing off the album, Flux shows us his down-tempo side with ambient sounds, bass bursts, vocals and melody. Flux Pavilion, once again, shows the uniqueness of his production skills which allows him to stand out from the rest of the dubstep scene.

2013 has been a pretty incredible year for the electronic music scene. New genres have emerged, songs have been turned into memes, and it seems like every festival is just trying to outdo the next. It’s awesome for us fans, but probably not so awesome for any struggling artist trying to get their music into our ears. We’ve put together a list of producers we think will be the next big thing within the next coming year.

Artists to Watch 2013

Flume

22-year-old Australian producer Flume got his start last year with his self-titled, 15-track album. His singles “Holdin On,” and “Sleepless,” were both chart toppers in his native country, and his most recent remix of Disclosure’s “You and Me” has been making huge waves in the online scene, gaining him a ton of new Facebook fans.

Flume’s “love trap” style is both funky and sexy, which completely separates him from all other artists. His 2013 US/Canada tour, which included multiple shows in Austin for SXSW, was the first of what we think will be many US appearances for this artist on the rise.

Facebook // SoundCloud // Twitter

Sleepy Tom

We’ve been huge fans of Sleepy Tom since before our interview with him a couple months back. This guy has had a huge year — his monster EP, The Currency, was released on Fools Gold Records, his remixes and bootlegs have gotten thousands of plays on SoundCloud, and he just had a guest spot on Diplo’s BBC show, Diplo & Friends.

Sleepy Tom has that big room sound without the bro feeling, if that makes any sense. His music is fun and creative. Bouncy and hard at the same time. The Vancouver native has been playing shows across Canada and the US, and we can only pray we get to see him on tour sometime soon.

Lindsay Lowend

Washington D.C. based producer Lindsay Lowend is by far and away one of the funkiest new producers to break out on to the electronic scene. His EP Wind Fish is chock-full of some of the biggest and probably most refreshing sounds we’ve heard this year. Another young producer, Lindsay Lowend is only going up with his unique genre-bending style.

Combining elements of trap, funk, and 8-bit tunes, Lindsay Lowend brings a new take on what most would call “chill” music. It’s like if Super Mario was a member of Chromeo. Although we don’t have any information regarding any future plans for Lowend, we guarantee he’ll be one of the best artists of 2014 and beyond

With a combination Moombahton and House music, it wasn’t very clear what these two were trying to accomplish. The EP still kicked some serious ass, and got them a release on Mad Decent. This year, however, Australian duo What So Not has truly proven themselves to be one of the best artists to watch in the next coming year.

With their release of The Quack EP on OWSLA Records and countless remixes, What So Not has gotten the attention of DJs like Flosstradamus, Tiga, and Nero. Comprised of Flume (yup), and Emoh Instead, What So Not has really grown into their own within the past year. With a combination of genuinely fun house and some super dirty trap/hip hop influenced tracks, these guys are going to be some awesome dudes to keep your eye on.
We were shocked when we saw these guys weren’t getting enough attention, as the aforementioned EP, Steal The Sun, was one of the best releases of 2013 hands down. Pulling from the underground/garage/house family, Icarus combines a four-on-the-floor beat with some of that sexy, booty-shaking bass everyone knows and loves.

While the brother duo has yet to cross the pond, they continue to play shows in the UK. As their fan base continues to grow, we’re sure we’ll be seeing plenty of Icarus within the next year, especially with OWSLA on backing them the whole way. Icarus is definitely the number 1 artist to watch for 2014 and beyond. Go like them on Facebook and watch them climb the ladder to stardom.
