Ünless you’ve been living under a rock since the beginning of last year, then you know Jack Ü is the biggest mayhem maker in all of dance music right now. Skrillex and Diplo’s super-group duo has been making headlines with every little move they’ve made over the last year. From impromptu house parties in Austin, to surprise sets in LA, HARD Summer, Mad Decent Boat Party and everywhere in between, Jack Ü is dominating dance music and it is all culminating to a full-length album which you can expect to finally drop this month.

Mad Decent’s head-honcho, accompanied by Madonna, rubbed shoulders all along the red carpet this past weekend for the 57th Annual GRAMMY awards, and during a short interview with CBS’ Tyler Oakley, Diplo spilled a slew of exciting news. After a little small talk about flashy red carpet threads, Diplo explains his plans with everything he has under the hood.

Wes dishes details on his collaborations with Madge, which are due to be released officially in March. He gets into discussing his other project, the Major Lazer collective, which is slated to drop an album in April along with a star-studded list of contributors. However news of Jack Ü’s highly anticipated album finally reaching the wire might be the most exciting gossip that Diplo shares in the brief yet telling interview.

Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike collaborated with DVBBS & Borgeous and unleashed this big-room tempo late last year. This new remix by Major Lazer X P.A.F.F. remix can be a prime example of this season’s energy. The amount of artists invested into this one track is quite amazing.  As if the “Stampede” original wasn’t massive enough, Major Lazer and P.A.F.F. take this tune into a whole new monstrous level with dynamic drops paired with exuberant vibes and bass. You can expect this to be released on March 10 through Spinning Records, but until then stream below and enjoy!

Mad Decent’s poster child, Major Lazer, released their new EP titled Apocalypse Soon this past Tuesday. Despite some changes in membership over the years, this is seventh EP released by Major Lazer on top of two studio albums since the group first formed in 2009.

Apocalypse Soon consists of five tracks in total, with some notable guests from the Hip-Hop world such as Sean Paul and Pharrell. This EP is straight funky, opening with Pharrell William’s deranged, Moombah-Step ballad titled “Aerosol Can”. Pharrell’s generous use of quote-unquote, the N word, and Major Lazer’s latin-style drum arrangement will easily remind you of your childhood.

Although Sean Paul has never been my niche, “Come On To Me” could be considered one of the better tracks from his career and takes us back to Major Lazer’s “Guns Don’t Kill People…” days.

Continuing on, Major Lazer spits out some real bangers for you with “Sound Bang” and “Lose Yourself”, throw those on and tell me you’re not dancing in your seat wishing your Macbook speakers weren’t so blown out from all the dubstep you played three years ago.

Closing with “Dale Asi”, a track fueled by Hip-Hop beats and sliding synths overlaid with Spanish vocals, Major Lazer embodies everything they’ve aspired to be: a seamless blend of Reggaeton-Electro-Dance Hall.

While this is going to be a successful release for the trio, Apocalypse Soon in no way could be considered their best work. We should definitely expect to see some awesome remixes come off this EP throughout the year, especially as festival season gets closer. So if Major Lazer’s newest release didn’t blow your pants off, at least we should have that to look forward to.

After the release of their newest EP, Apocalypse Soon, Major Lazer has released the “Lose Yourself” official music video. Set in Jamaica (ML’s biggest market as well as inspiration), the Lose Yourself video is a whole lot of hot dancers shakin’ their booties in various locations including abandon warehouses, streets, and what appears to be a helicopter landing pad (or maybe the top of a huge water tower?).

To be completely honest, I don’t hate this song as much as I thought I would when I saw that Sean Paul was involved. If anything, he improves the song’s Dance Hall vibes with his weird yet distinct Jamaican vocals.

This is the kind of music Paul should have been making, or at least should start making now.

Apocalypse Soon is shaping up to be a pretty sick EP from Major Lazer, who has been going through some interesting transitioning over the past couple of years. It seems that now, however, the trio of ML (consisting of Diplo, Jillionaire, and Walshy Fire) has tightened up their production styles and are on their way to making huge waves yet again.

The saying goes, “everything is bigger in Texas.” Lights All Night in Dallas was no exception. Taking place in the Dallas Convention Center (literally one of the biggest venues I’ve ever seen an indoor festival take place), Lights All Night was two days full of top-billing artists, awesome visuals, and a whole lotta PLUR.

Day 1

I started the day off arriving in Dallas with just enough time to drop my bags off, grab a quick bite to eat, and hop in a cab before catching Icona Pop at the main stage, “The Mothership.” Before the all-girl duo took stage, I honestly had my doubts. I’m typically not a fan of live vocals (or live instruments for that matter) during an EDM show, but as soon as they took the stage I was blown away. With impressive vocal harmonies and fantastic stage presence, Icona Pop was definitely the best way to start off the night.

Before too long I decided to mosey on over to the next stage, “Boombox,” to see Le Castle Vania who was someone I’ve heard great things about but never actually had the chance to see. He definitely lived up to his reputation, playing a high energy, progressive set.

Next on my list was Carnage. Not only is the dude a big guy, his set was just as huge. Blending trap and big room, Carnage was definitely in my top 5 favorite sets of the entire weekend. And, with some insane pyrotechnics blasting across the stage, things were definitely starting to heat up.

Zomboy was another surprise of the night, playing a strictly dubstep set. I really had my doubts about this young talent, but seeing him live was one of the most fun experiences of the weekend. His energy was absorbed by the crowd and made his set more than just an auditory experience.

After a quick set change, Grizmatik took the stage at Boombox and threw down one of the funkiest sets I’ve seen in a very, very long time. With a combined effort from Griz and the two-man troupe Gramatik, the room was full of sax, guitar, and huge beats. It was so much fun seeing these three truly enjoying themselves in front of a packed audience.

I wrapped up the night with one of the biggest (and most outspoken) producers in the world — Deadmau5 — whose set was a perfect combination of old and new. After some minor technical difficulties, the mau5 was up and running, and before long had the crowd screaming the lyrics to “Ghosts ‘n Stuff.” “Oh, come on! Don’t act like you don’t know the words!”

Day 2

The second day of Lights All Night started off after another late start — a little sightseeing in Dallas never hurt anyone! I got to the show just in time to catch Nom De Strip, another act I had heard great things about but never had the chance to see. He also lived up to the hype with a set full of a little bit of everything — disco house, progressive house, big room, etc. I could tell he was humbled a bit when he looked out and saw the massive amount of people that had gathered to watch him play. 

Next up was Kill Paris who was also on his funk game, even more so than when we saw him at the True Music Festival in Phoenix. With huge tracks and an even bigger stage persona, Kill Paris was another fun one to watch for sure.

After Kill Paris I pretty much set up camp at the Boombox stage to see four of my favorite artists from 2013. First up, Paper Diamond. PD was one of my surprise favorites at HARD Summer, and was in my top 5 from LAN as well. His set was full of some of the best trap tracks of the year along with a new collaboration with Arizona native Protohype. I also later found out he performed his entire set with a broken foot, and when asking him about the injury he stated, “broke my foot but I’m still out here partying!”

Once the dust had settled from PD’s set, the one and only A-Trak took the stage. Now, I’ve seen A-Trak multiple times within the past few years, but no set came close to the one he played at LAN. Playing all his hits while catering to the raver audience, A-Trak was one of the hardest sets and definitely my favorite of the weekend.

Legendary duo Above & Beyond took to the Boombox stage next, playing a set consisting of their hits including their Blue Monday remix, giving their crowd some very much needed Group Therapy.

To end the night, I stuck around to catch one of my all-time favorites, Major Lazer. The trio could not have made for a better way to end my weekend in Dallas. Their set included their most recent hits like “Jet Blue Jet,” along with their classic ML antics like Diplo roaming the crowd in his Zorb ball.

After leaving the venue that night, I ran into two older women with “Rave Mom” printed on their shirts. I asked if they were picking up their kids and, in a very southern accent, they responded, “Oh hell nah, we were here partyin’! We just love Kaskade and Above and Beyond. We would’ve stayed all night but it’s already way past our bed times!” Definitely the highlight of my entire trip.

Lights All Night 2013 Review

Lights All Night was a well-organized production with very little to complain about. One thing I noticed was the fact that the Silent Disco stage was almost completely hidden. To be honest, I actually still have no idea where it was.

Security was just tight enough, and there seemed to be little to no medical emergencies. The “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy put in place by the festival was also a great addition.

While not everyone is addicted to cigarettes, I still found the “smoking lounge” (basically just  fenced off area outside the venue) could have had a bit more organization. Separate “in” and “out” doors would have been a great idea.

As promised, the sound was on point and the stages all had fantastic visuals. The Dallas Convention Center was a perfect place to hold the venue, as attendees could cross over from stage to stage with ease, relax in the lobby area, and purchase food, drinks, and souvenirs from vendors surrounding the stages. There was never any overlap of sound from either one of the stages, and guests seemed to be having a generally awesome time throughout.

All in all, there was still that one thing every festival would suck without — unity. As lame as it may sound Lights All Night was a look inside the Dallas EDM scene which, judging by these two nights, is alive and well. Everyone got along just fine and there were zero fights, arguments, etc. The love for EDM was in the air and it was truly a PLUR-tastic time.

If given the opportunity, I would ABSOLUTELY head back to Dallas for Lights All Night. Thanks for having us!

Baauer

Since we profiled Baauer in 2012 his career has skyrocketed. However annoying “The Harlem Shake” phenomenon was it did help bring Baauer and trap into the public eye. Since his breakout success Baauer has feuded with Azaelia Banks, collaborated with Jay-Z, and embarked on tours with Danny Brown and RL Grime.

Most recently, the Brooklyn transplant collaborated with RL Grime on the massively popular “Infinite Daps” If there is a face to the Trap movement it’s probably Baauer.

Bro Safari

Bro Safari also had a successful 2013.  He headlined the Animal House tour with other trap mainstays, ETC! ETC!, CRNKN, and Brillz. Additionally, Bro Safari had a short run opening up for EDM wunderkind Skrillex on his Fall Club Tour 2013.

The young producer has produced remixes for Kill the Noise, Steve Aoki, and Skrillex. In June he released the collaborative EP “Animal” with UFO!

Flosstradamus

UZ

The enigmatic producer has enjoyed moderate success in the past year. He has continued his “Trap Shit” series and released tracks through Boys Noize Records and OWSLA. Additionally, UZ has crafted remixes for Jack Beats, Zeds Dead, and Alex Metric.

It’s still a mystery who is behind the mask, but I think we will see more of the gilded masquerade in 2014.

Kid Kamillion

Looks like we can’t predict them all! Kid Kamillion has virtually fallen off the map in 2013. After releasing his massive remix to A-Trak‘s “Heads Will Roll”, Kid Kamillion has slowly been releasing tracks throughout the year.

Kamillion never made it on the festival circuit and it appears he is only performing in his hometown of New Orleans. I just listened to his newest EP, it’s not bad but it’s nothing special.

Artists Who Blew Up in 2013

RL Grime

What began as a side-project of hard house producer Clockwork has quickly become the more recognizable name in EDM. RL Grime’s popular Halloween mixes are some of the best in trap music as the young producer intuitively mixes contemporary trap with 90’s hip-hop staples.

Earlier this year RL Grime embarked on the “Infinite Daps” tour with Baauer and Ryan Hemsworth. Additionally, he performed some of the hardest sets at Hard Summer and Hard Haunted this year. Remixes of tracks by Chief Keef, Rihanna, and Benny Benassi indicate we will be seeing more Grime in the New Year.

TNGHT

Artists Hudson Mohawke and Lunice had been producing hip-hop tracks for years before joining forces to form TNGHT.

The duo’s 2012 debut ep “TNGHT” garnered critical acclaim and has been used in everything from shoe commercials to being sample on Kanye West’s “Blood on the Leaves.” Stellar performances as Hard Summer and Coachella cemented their status as trap innovators. Several artists have adopted TNGHT’s use of “brass” synthesizers.

Brillz

Brillz rose to fame after releasing an insane remix for Kill The Noise’s “Roots”, and he has been releasing track after delicious track since.

What So Not, utilizes crunchy synthesizer and a heavy style that isn’t seen often. Their remix of Major Lazer’s, Get Free has attracted over 500,000 hits on Soundcloud.

DJ collaborations on a single track is one thing, but when they begin to create albums and EP’s and start to tour under the same name, they give the idea of a supergroup an awesome, electronic revival. We’ve compiled a list of what we think are the five top DJ supergroups, in no particular order…

Top 5 DJ Supergroups:

1. Duck Sauce

Comprised of two of the biggest disco house artists in the world, Arman Van Helden and A-Trak, Duck Sauce is one of Fool’s Gold Records biggest artists. In 2009 the two released their Greatest Hits EP with tracks “aNYway” and “You’re Nasty.” The EP did alright, and it wasn’t until their 2010 release of “Barbra Streisand” that Duck Sauce was a household name. The track also got the group a nomination for Best Break-Through Artist and an award for Best Underground Dance Track at the International Dance Music Awards. The two have been touring around the world and can be seen headlining the first night of HARD Summer this year.

2. Major Lazer

In the summer of 2009, DJs Diplo and Switch released their first collaborative album, Guns Don’t Kill People… Lazers Do with the smash single “Pon De Floor.” Major Lazer then began touring the country and became known for their incredible live performances which included hype man Skerrit Bwoy and a crew of intense break dancers and aerial acrobats who jump from ladders and hump each other upon landing. Major Lazer has worked with artists like No Doubt, La Roux, Beyonce and Snoop Dogg. In 2011, Switch left the group because of “creative differences” according to Diplo who continues Major Lazer as a side project that collaborates with other trending artists. So, yes, technically this is no longer a “supergroup” but instead just a SUPER group.

3. Dog Blood

What happens when you combine two of the biggest names in EDM? You get a big ol’ mess of Dog Blood. Skrillex, who took the Dubstep scene by complete storm (some have said he’s even killed the genre entirely), and Boys Noize, who has been the poster boy for German techno for the past decade, released their first two tracks “New Order” and “Middle Finger” in August of 2012 and had their first live performance at HARD’s New Year’s Eve that same year. Since then, the two have been dominating the live circuit at festivals like Ultra, Coachella, and (you guessed it) HARD Summer. The most interesting thing is how close the two artists have gotten and how well they work together. Given the genre’s they each come from, no one would have thought that Skrillex and Boys Noize would create such a monster of EDM.

4. Swedish House Mafia

By far the most popular and successful supergroup on this list, Swedish House Mafia has been one of the biggest reasons that electronic dance music has broken through into the main scene over the past 5 years. Made up of producers Axwell, Steve Angello, and Sebastian Ingrosso, the group formed in 2008 and have continued to take the entire world by storm. With countless top 10 tracks in the UK and US, Swedish House Mafia has been breaking records everywhere they go, including being the first EDM artist to perform in and sell out Madison Square Garden. Their so-called final tour named “One Last Tour” started in November 2012 and ended with their “last” performance together at Ultra Music Festival on March 24th 2013.

5. Destroid

The newest of the supergroups on this list, Destroid, is a last-ditch effort to save Dubstep — and they’re actually doing a pretty good job. Producers Excision, Downlink, and former Pendulum drummer KJ Sawka formed Destroid in 2009 and have been working for the past 3 years to build up tracks and hype up their first live performance which took place on May 31, 2013 in San Francisco. Their sound is something like Nu-Metal meets Dubstep and is actually not that terrible. As the hardcore EDM genres appear to be coming to a close, it will be exciting to see where the group can go — and for how long.
