While bigger and better things appear to be on the horizon for the Los Angeles based producer, he has not forgotten about the fans who have supported him throughout the years. Via Soundcloud, Ballast has dropped a bevvy of free downloads and unreleased tracks that have accumulated over the years, as well as a link to a DJ Sliink Bootleg, the young dj has been playing out for some time now.

A quote pulled from the artist’s Facebook page shows his appreciation for fans of his tech-heavy bass music that will make him a staple of Dirtybird for years to come.

I’ve never been to a festival with a more beautiful setting than SnowGlobe Music Festival in South Lake Tahoe. Waking up and looking out onto the lake and being embedded in the lush green forest with snow on the ground was something completely out of my element. The festival itself was also something unlike anything I’ve ever experienced…

Day 1

I must admit, I’m pissed off my travel plans set me back so far. I honestly ended up missing the better half of the first day of the festival, and only arrived in time to see the last three or four acts, missing some heavy hitters like Holy Ghost!, Kastle, Gramatik, and more. The first act I got to see the first night was UK artist Star Slinger whose bass-filled house set at the Sierra Tent was definitely a good one to get in the mood.

The only thing I have to say about Tiesto is that he was Tiesto — and I mean that in the best way possible. Although I’m not a huge fan, Tiesto really does know how to get a crowd going. For anyone who’s into some serious party/festival rave music, he’s your man. For those looking to get down to some real deep, booty-shakin’ house music, Justin Martin was at the Igloo Tent only a half hour later.

Justin’s set was definitely one for the books, and as a huge Dirtybird fan, you better believe I had a fan girl moment getting to watch his set. Closing out the first night of the festival, Justin Martin played an hour and forty-five minute set to a tent packed full of fans. After his last track the audience was screaming for just one more. Justin looked over to the security guard who luckily granted him another five minutes. Fans rushed the stage when the set was over and the first night was under wraps.

Day 2

I started off my second day at SnowGlobe getting to enjoy the first half of Kill Paris‘s set and then heading straight to the Main Stage for Zeds Dead. Now, in the past I’ve admitted to being on the fence with Zeds Dead, mainly because I caught them right as they got their start, when “Coffee Break” was their claim to fame. In those days, Zeds Dead wasn’t anything to write home about.

Almost three years alter these guys have completely changed my mind. From dubstep to festival trap, the Toronto-based duo had one of the most impressive sets of the weekend, completely packing the grounds at the Main Stage.

I need not yet again mention my love for Dirtybird, so it goes without saying that my excitement level was at an all-time high at the Claude VonStroke show. Getting to see his show at both HARD Summer and his latest US tour, I was expecting to see somewhat of the same set at SnowGlobe. Fortunately, I was incorrect in my assumption and was blown away at some of the material Claude VonStroke was spinning that night. With classic jams like “Turbosteppa” along with some smash hits from his newest album, Urban Animal, mixed in, the Claude VonStroke show was definitely something to remember.

Justin Jay kept the Dirtybird vibes alive in the Igloo Tent, and after closing the night with the theme song from Space Jam, it was safe to say I got enough deep house for the entire weekend.

Day 3

Finally, the heaviest weighing lineup of the entire festival was upon us. Luminox had a great energy on stage to get the party started right: the young Phoenix native was on point with his set, bringing a TON of people to the Sierra tent — something I wasn’t expecting.

Dillon Francis was up next on the Main Stage with a set that wasn’t as great as I had wanted. I’m not sure if it’s because I had seen him a couple times throughout the year, or if his set at HARD Summer was one of my favorite of 2013, but there was something about Dillon’s set that seemed a bit forced. Maybe it was because he was about to hop on a plane to finish off the year in San Francisco with A-Trak. Either way, it was fun as hell and the crowd didn’t seem to mind.

The next heavy hitter of the night was the one and only Snoop Dogg who surprised me by playing all of his classics instead of some of his newer, Snoop Lion material.

Cashmere Cat was next on my list, and damn did he throw down. The crowd at the front was dancing so hard they literally broke through the gate and had to have security come and put it back together. Definitely one of the most memorable sets of the weekend.

I finished off the night watching Cut Copy and, to be completely honest, wasn’t too blown away. They didn’t even stop to bring in the new year, playing through the countdown and finishing their set with a remark like, “Oh fuck! Happy New Year!” The fireworks were fun though!

SnowGlobe Music Festival 2013 Review

Overall I think this was a fantastic festival. With great organization, awesome vendors for food and beer, and a beautiful setting, SnowGlobe 2013 was definitely the best festival I could have been at to close out an already incredible year.

Some negatives: I think the whole show should have been pushed back by a few hours. I’m sure the organizers had to deal with noise level restrictions seeing as the venue is right in the middle of a suburban area, but it was difficult to make it to the show by the 3 o’clock start time. I would have also tried to get a better closer for New Years Eve. Cut Copy was great, but not really the best compared to the rest of the acts they had closing the other nights.

Some positives: The festival was super diverse. Booty house, progressive house, big names, small names… I was glad I got to catch a whole smorgasbord of different acts. Sierra Nevada was the beer of choice, and a great one at that. The prices for food and beverages were also very reasonable.

One of the best things about this festival is the shuttle system. Although it could have been a bit more organized on the final evening, I thought that it was still an awesome, safe, and convenient way to get to and from the show.

SnowGlobe Music Festival was by far and away one of the best festivals I’ve been to, especially in terms of NYE fests. The homegrown vibe was a nice change of pace, and while it seems as though they’re still getting some things together, the folks over at SnowGlobe are on their way to becoming hosts to one of the biggest festivals in the US. If you’ve ever even considered spending your New Years at SnowGlobe, I highly, highly encourage you to do so.

Claude VonStroke, head of Dirtybird Records and top dog of the revival of the deep house movement, has released an uncut version of his 2013 Essential Mix. The mix, originally recorded for BBC Radio 1, includes original track versions with swearing and without any annoying radio tags.

Upon release, Claude VonStroke had this to say:

Simply put, Thee Mike B is by far one of the most underrated DJ’s around today.

Los Angeles native and all around nice guy, Thee Mike B has collaborated with some of the biggest names in EDM (Diplo, DJ AM, and Steve Aoki are just some of the legendary producers on his list), and has been a part of projects like POOLS, Graveleaf, and Fifteenth since the late 90’s.

With records released on Fool’s Gold, Dim Mak, and Mad Decent, Thee Mike B is an artist that refuses to subscribe to any genre. As long as a song has a beat and makes people dance, Thee Mike B is going to play it. And you will dance. 

We were lucky enough to get to chat with Thee Mike B about how he started, his influences as a DJ, and why dance music should just be dance music.

Just Noise To Me: What got you into DJing/producing? Was there one artist or producer you saw/heard that made you want to get into it?

I started collecting 12″‘s and asked for real turntables for my 13th, as I was using two different random 80’s record players with no pitch control ’til then.

But the DJs who really inspired me early on were Rob-ONE, Jason Blakemore, R.A.W., Doc Martin, Donald Glaude, Spinbad, Funkmaster Flex, Stretch Armstrong and DJ Sneak.

Good music and good people are the things that truly matter.

I’m really excited for the new Basement Jaxx album too. They are all time greats. As far as dance stuff, Play It Down, Bromance, Fool’s Gold, Boys Noize, Ed Banger, Grizzly, Dirtybird, Marble and Sound Pellegrino are all labels putting out amazing stuff.

There is no such thing as a good genre. Only good music. I don’t really understand the term EDM, and it seems to be used as a way to umbrella too much different stuff. So I don’t use that term.

A good DJ should be able to present different styles while maintaining a vibe. I like to think I’ve gotten good at that over the years.

It’s also just great to turn work into hanging out with friends. It’s seriously the best. I’ve been very lucky to make music with some of my best friends as well as some of my musical idols.

JNTM: What can we expect for Thee Mike B as far as touring, mixes, remixes?

 

TMB: I’m doing a Canadian tour as Fifteenth (with Sammy Bananas) in October, and some EU dates soon with Play It Down (Jesse Rose and Oliver’s label.) My first ever solo EP, which will be on Play It Down, will be out by the end of the year.

 

I’ve got a few more collaborative projects happening right now, but I’ll keep those secret. I will say that they are with some of my all time favorite producers! I’ve also just finished a remix for my friends Trinidad-Senolia that should be out soon on Osunlande’s Yoruba imprint.

 

As far as mixes, I make a lot of them, all kinds and they are all up on my SoundCloud.

JNTM: Just for fun, if you weren’t a producer, what would your dream job be?

 

TMB: Point guard for the LA Lakers.

In all reality though, there really isn’t much Richards aka Destructo could have done to make the schedule any easier for die-hard EDM fans. To be completely honest, I’m actually glad the schedule is so tough. In years past, and I think many can agree, I’ve made my schedule decisions in advance and stuck to them without hesitation, leading me to miss some incredible new artists. Now, I’ve decided to completely abandon the my strict scheduling and go with the flow.

Since the schedule has been released, we here at JNTM have put together a list of a few must-see acts, scheduling surprises, and acts to pass for your viewing pleasure:

HARD Summer 2013 Must-See Acts

DJ Green Lantern: One of the more underground DJ’s to be playing HARD Summer this year, DJ Green Lantern was the official DJ for Shady Records and has been featured on multiple mixtapes. He is sure to blow audiences away with live scratching and incredible mixing.

TNGHT: One of the best duos in EDM right now, TNGHT has taken the Trap scene to extreme levels. You won’t want to miss these two since they’ve only recently started performing together live.

Cashmere Cat: 25 year-old Norwegian DJ Magnus August Høiberg is a must-see at this year’s HARD Summer because of his genre-bending style and incredible remixes. Since 2007 Cashmere Cat has been climbing the ladder so you’ll definitely want to catch him while he’s on his way up!

Dog Blood: Boys Noize and Skrillex. Need I say more? Check out their Coachella set and you’ll see why these two are a must-see this year.

Claude VonStroke: Founder of Dirtybird Records, Claude Vonstroke has been well known in the underground Deep House movement seemingly since the start of the genre itself. Playing for 2 hours this summer, you’ll want to see every minute for the most booty shaking experience at HARD.

Hard Summer 2013 Scheduling Surprises

Bauuer: Headlining the Harder stage and closing out the entire festival, Baauer is a shocker because he has been having such early set times at festivals like HARD Day of the Dead 2012 and Coachella 2013. The only thing that leads one to believe his set time: Harlem Shake.

Tommy Trash: Another DJ playing a bit too early, Tommy Trash is a household name these days and could easily be playing at a time like Kill the Noise or Alex Metric…

Brodinski: 4PM seems a little early for a DJ that’s been selling out places like the Boiler Room and other festivals around the world. Given the stage he’s on, his competition is a little steep, however.

Hard Summer 2013 Acts to Pass

Bassnectar: How Bassnectar is headlining the Hard Stage on Sunday night is more than a little shocking. Yes, he has an incredible live light/video show, but since the release of his newest album, the DJ is pretty much a “push play” performer.

Azealia Banks: When your options are Gesaffelstein or Breakbot, you definitely pass on Azelia Banks. Plus, she’s been getting in tons of trouble because of her recent arguments with DJ’s like Baauer and Diplo after she stole their music to sing on. Seriously.

Flux Pavilion: As a Flux fan I hate to say it, but with such a stacked lineup this year Flux Pavilion is an act to pass. Competing with the end (and most likely best part) of Dog Blood’s set, and Deep House up-and-comer Julio Basmore’s set, it’s advised to skip out on a DJ of the dying dubstep.

Short after the creation of the label, Dirtybird was able to land licensing gigs with the CSI Season 9 premier, Nike, and Lincoln Mercury. The Martin Brothers (Justin and Christian) had the number 1 song on Beatport and Claude Vonstroke was hand picked to DJ one of Diddy’s beach parties in South Beach.

The music coming out of the record company has been described as “booty house” “dirty house” or “bass house.” Whatever you want to call it, it’s really some of the most funky, minimal electronic music on the market and is on it’s way to becoming the next big thing. They’ve even landed their own stage at HARD Summer this year and a summer-long residency at the world famous Sankeys club in Ibiza.

With the world of EDM constantly evolving, it’s tough to say where exactly we’ll see DBR go from here. However, if their mass amounts of success in less than ten years is any indication we should be seeing lots more from this talented group of booty-shake inducing producers.
