]]> HARD Day of the Dead 2014 lineup

The HARD Day of the Dead 2014 lineup has officially been announced — not even four weeks after HARD Summer 2014.  With almost no time to recuperate, folks around the country are already getting geared up and ready to go for another HARD Presents… event.

As with any lineup announcement, this year’s DOTD is full of surprises. One of the biggest surprise with this lineup is the b2b set with Deadmau5 and Eric Prydz. Although the two first made history earlier this year in Miami with a b2b set at a Miami Music Week club show, the two have yet to perform together in such a huge setting.

Another unexpected treat for this year’s DOTD is the return of Knife Party. As far as HARD events goes, we haven’t seen these two since the very first Day of the Dead (after the name was changed from Hard Haunted Mansion). With multiple “leaks” from their upcoming album, Knife Party’s return to the DOTD stage is going to be one for the books.

One of the biggest surprises for Day of the Dead 2014 is the change in venue. As HARD continues to grow with every year, it requires a bigger venue in order to contain the thousands upon thousands of Los Angeles party-goers.

This year’s DOTD will actually be moving away from the Los Angeles area into Ponoma area where the Los Angeles Fair Grounds (Fairplex) are held. Whether or not this was a last-minute change because of complaints from Whittier Park or if this was something Gary Richards had in mind all along, it seems as though the venue will be large enough to hold this year’s HARD goers and then some.

Miami duo GTA will be taking to the road starting next month, bringing another JNTM favorite, What So Not.  The twenty-three-stop tour will feature shows across North America (and Hawaii) and will include performances at festivals like Winter Wonderland, Coachella, and Ultra Music Festival.

]]> One year ago today, I wrote my first article for JNTM titled, “Top 5: Trap Music Producers”. Well it has been a whirlwind year for the then burgeoning genre of EDM with roots in the hip-hop community. In 2013, Trap artists rose to the top of popular festivals edging out the reigning genre dubstep.

I was planning on writing another “Top 5” post, but there are so many trap artists and sub genres I think a simple retrospective of the genre with suffice. Let’s take a look at what 2012’s top trap producers are up to and the future of the genre.

Since we profiled Baauer in 2012 his career has skyrocketed. However annoying “The Harlem Shake” phenomenon was it did help bring Baauer and trap into the public eye. Since his breakout success Baauer has feuded with Azaelia Banks, collaborated with Jay-Z, and embarked on tours with Danny Brown and RL Grime.

Most recently, the Brooklyn transplant collaborated with RL Grime on the massively popular “Infinite Daps” If there is a face to the Trap movement it’s probably Baauer.

Bro Safari also had a successful 2013.  He headlined the Animal House tour with other trap mainstays, ETC! ETC!, CRNKN, and Brillz. Additionally, Bro Safari had a short run opening up for EDM wunderkind Skrillex on his Fall Club Tour 2013.

The young producer has produced remixes for Kill the Noise, Steve Aoki, and Skrillex. In June he released the collaborative EP “Animal” with UFO!

Top Trap Producers

The enigmatic producer has enjoyed moderate success in the past year. He has continued his “Trap Shit” series and released tracks through Boys Noize Records and OWSLA. Additionally, UZ has crafted remixes for Jack Beats, Zeds Dead, and Alex Metric.

It’s still a mystery who is behind the mask, but I think we will see more of the gilded masquerade in 2014.

Looks like we can’t predict them all! Kid Kamillion has virtually fallen off the map in 2013. After releasing his massive remix to A-Trak‘s “Heads Will Roll”, Kid Kamillion has slowly been releasing tracks throughout the year.

Kamillion never made it on the festival circuit and it appears he is only performing in his hometown of New Orleans. I just listened to his newest EP, it’s not bad but it’s nothing special.

Artists Who Blew Up in 2013

What began as a side-project of hard house producer Clockwork has quickly become the more recognizable name in EDM. RL Grime’s popular Halloween mixes are some of the best in trap music as the young producer intuitively mixes contemporary trap with 90’s hip-hop staples.

Earlier this year RL Grime embarked on the “Infinite Daps” tour with Baauer and Ryan Hemsworth. Additionally, he performed some of the hardest sets at Hard Summer and Hard Haunted this year. Remixes of tracks by Chief Keef, Rihanna, and Benny Benassi indicate we will be seeing more Grime in the New Year.

Artists Hudson Mohawke and Lunice had been producing hip-hop tracks for years before joining forces to form TNGHT.

The duo’s 2012 debut ep “TNGHT” garnered critical acclaim and has been used in everything from shoe commercials to being sample on Kanye West’s “Blood on the Leaves.” Stellar performances as Hard Summer and Coachella cemented their status as trap innovators. Several artists have adopted TNGHT’s use of “brass” synthesizers.

Brillz rose to fame after releasing an insane remix for Kill The Noise’s “Roots”, and he has been releasing track after delicious track since.

What So Not, utilizes crunchy synthesizer and a heavy style that isn’t seen often. Their remix of Major Lazer’s, Get Free has attracted over 500,000 hits on Soundcloud.

Mad Decent side project Jeffree’s has been a means of releasing records and singles some of the more lesser-known talents for the past few years. Since 2011, Jeffree releases have given artists like Swizzymack, Bro Safari, and UZ the chance to showcase their talents to an audience they would have otherwise never been able to reach.

The first installment of Best of Jeffree’s, listeners get the best from all 8 volumes of EP’s, with tracks from artists including Diplo, GTA, DJ Snake, Yellow Claw, and Andy Milonakis‘ latest project, Three Loco.

Best of Jeffree’s Volume One

Paul Devro, creative director and artist on Mad Decent, had the following to say about the intentions behind Jeffree’s:

Since the start of Mad Decent, Diplo and I have fought the discouraging reality of having to pass on amazing records again and again. The old model of a releasing music wasn’t working for us, so we had to find a new way. We brainstormed for months and came up with Jeffree’s; a modern record label that embraces technology and human demand for more content by dropping a new release every week to 2 weeks. And the best part? It’s all free. Yes, all releases are free to the public for a limited amount of time, no strings attached. True to Mad Decent’s style, we’ve kept it eclectic by releasing everything from psych, juke, rap to dancehall with our main focus being emerging club music. It’s a futuristic platform to expose music from the world’s most revolutionary producers and artists in a way never attempted before.

It has truly been a dream of mine since I started DJing and collecting music to run my own label. Scouring the internet looking for new talent and sounds to share is the common bond that sparked Diplo and I’s friendship over 10 years ago. What began as Mad Decent’s ‘lil experiment’ has turned into one of the label’s greatest success stories. So, please enjoy this varied 2-disc collection of music from some of the most talented producers the world has to offer!

Quinn ‘TurtleGravy’ Tucker will be our eyes and ears out in Venice, CA, where he studies film production at Santa Monica College in hopes of transferring to the celebrated School of Theater, Film, and Television.

TurtleGravy loves eating cookie butter from Trader Joe’s, watching French New Wave Films, and having dreadlocks. He also enjoys “slangin’ DSLRs at Best Buy.”  We were able to ask Quinn some more questions about his taste in music, favorite artists, and much more.

JNTM: Who are some of your favorite producers right now?
Quinn: Lunice and HudMo [Hudson Mohawke] are both killing it right now. I also dig pretty much everything Skrillex has ever done. Jackal is up there along with Gaslamp Killer, Disclosure, Oliver, SBTRKT, and Gesaffelstein.
JNTM: If you could see any DJ/artist perform live, who would it be?
Quinn: I can die happy once I see Rage Against the Machine.
JNTM: What’s the last show/festival you went to? Who was your favorite artist there?
Quinn: I’m still suffering from the post-HARD blues. GTA threw one of the illest sets at Day of the Dead, hands down. Future headliners.
JNTM: What are some genres you really like and some you really hate? Any that you hate you like?
Quinn: Hip-hop will forever be my first love. Anything from golden era conscious rap to Dirty South trill shit. Naturally, I’m a trap-a-holic by way of dubstep.
Lately I’ve been really into disco, booty house, and UK garage. Oh, and Led Zeppelin is still the greatest band of all time.
JNTM: If you could produce a track or DJ with any producer who would it be and why?
Quinn: Kanye. ‘Nuff said.

]]> HARD Day of the Dead 2013 ReviewFor a child, Halloween means prancing around in a costume, giddy giggling with friends, and bountiful bags of sweets.  Push the clock forward a few years, subtract the sugar and add a medley of killer EDM artists, dazzling lights and chest-rattling bass, and you’ve got HARD Day of the Dead.  Really, it’s not all that different.

Gary Richards’ (AKA Destructo)’s renowned EDM festival returned with a bang this fall, bringing with it a devastating lineup, improved security procedures, and much more, making it one of the most enjoyable and powerful HARD experiences to date.

Following HARD Summer, it seemed nearly impossible that Live Nation Entertainment could compose a rivaling set of DJs and artists for Day of the Dead, but the return of veterans to the scene such as Skrillex, Nero, Zeds Dead, Calvin Harris, and many others brought the same jaw-clenching intensity that we’ve all grown to expect from the festival.

HARD Day of the Dead 2013 Review

While the big names dominated the later time slots of the weekend, some of the biggest surprises and most impressive performances took place before the sunset.  Lesser known artists such as David Heartbreak, Solidisco, and GTA provided a refreshing variety of sounds, including head-banging drops, groovy beats, and in-your-face-style trap, respectively.

Getting to the venue early in the day isn’t a priority for most, but those who made the effort this year were treated with stellar performances from the newcomers of the scene.  Them Jeans, Dusky, and a first-ever performance by Phuture Doom ensured that everyone was dancing from their first steps into the park.

While all the performers definitely proved themselves worthy of playing under the HARD logo, the buzz on everyone’s lips was the monumental finishing set by the iconic A-lister Deadmau5.

HARD Day of the Dead 2013 Review

New tracks, unexpected remixes of old ones, and soulful piano breaks made the mau5 the must-see set of the night that left many leaving the festival in tears (despite his sound cutting out, which he justified by announcing “I meant to do that, I’m like…the 12th best in the world at this…”).

The music aside, Day of the Dead 2013 was the most neatly put together and least problematic HARD Presents… event to date.  Long gone were the winding barricades that left event-goers in a riot-like frenzy last year, as well as the nonrefillable $5 waters that quickly emptied everyone’s wallets.

Instead, a more succinct and speedy trip through security put guests in the festival within minutes, and several water-refilling stations kept them hydrated through the day and into the night (although they did seem to have a tendency to break down during peak hours).

Gary Richards and Live Nation Entertainment really pulled it together this year for HARD Day of the Dead, putting together one of the hottest lineups around, fixing issues with previous events, and keeping legions of sweaty dancers safe and hydrated.  As the L.A. Historic Park returns to its normal state, we’ll all be marking our calendars in anticipation for the next one.

In 2011, Brazzabelle, aka Boots Bowles, released her first production, “Break Your Body,” and in just a few months became one of the hottest up-and-coming producers in Los Angeles, earning residencies in some of the biggest clubs on the west coast.
 
Within the past year alone, Brazzabelle has been seen playing shows alongside top-billing DJs such as Calvin Harris, The Bloody Beetroots, Porter Robinson, Martin Solveig and many more. She has also earned her spot at some of the biggest festivals in the world like EDC Puerto Rico, Sound Wave, and HARD Summer, while being featured on multiple mix tapes including Jessie Andrew’s Girlfriend Mix Volume 6 and Ultra Music Radio Mix.
 
Not only did we get to see her kill it at this year’s Sound Wave, we were able to catch up with her to see what it’s like to be one of the best young artists on the rise.
 

JNTM: I understand your mom got you started with music by making you take piano lessons. Did you ever think those lessons would lead you into a DJ/producing career? 

BRAZZABELLE: My mom was always trying to keep my sister and I busy so we were in lots of after school programs like sports and music lessons. At the time I didn’t really like it because I was only learning to play sheet music of songs I had no connection with which was boring.

I am a very practical person so I realized growing up that the chances of ever becoming a professional musician were slim to none so no, I never really thought my life would turn out this way!

JNTM: Who was the first electronic artist that you listened to that made you want to start producing/DJing? Who still inspires you to this day? 

BB: Some of my early inspirations were ATB, Darude, Modjo, Zombie Nation, Moby, Azzido Da Bass, Michael Woods, Fatboy Slim, Timo Mass, and Bob Sinclair to name a few.

I am still inspired by a lot of these producers, especially the ones who have been successful by evolving their sound to keep relevant and continually delivering hits songs that make people dance today.

brazzabelleJNTM: What do you think the hardest thing is about getting started/getting your name out there? 

BB: Everything is a hurdle in the beginning. Especially now more than ever because of how popular dance music has become — there are so many producers sending out promos that it is easier than ever to get lost in a sea of promo emails.

JNTM: Women in music have always had a strong presence, but now even more so in electronic music. How do female artists like Nervo, J. Phlip, Maya Jane Coles, and others inspire you? Do you have a favorite female DJ/producer right now? 

BB: I have two favorites, the first is Anna Lunoe who I cannot say enough great things about not only is she a talented dj and producer, but that girl can sing!
 
My second favorite is a girl named Hannah Wants who I discovered on SoundCloud about a
year ago and really fell in love with her tracks.
 
JNTM: Who are your favorite artists right now, EDM or not? 
 
BB: Right now I’m really into GTA, Alvaro, Moska, Baxta, Gorgon City, D.O.D., Carnage, Mercer, Sander Van Doorn, Wiwek, Juyen Sebulba, DJ Snake, Matthew LeFace, Crystal Fighters to name a few…
 
brazzabelleJNTM: You’ve had a lot of great success this year! You just played at EDC Puerto Rico, Electric Zoo, and HARD Summer, you’ve opened for Martin Solveig, you just did a collaboration with gLAdiators… How do you stay focused and grounded during all of this? Do you have a mantra or anything to keep yourself humbled or do you just embrace the craziness!? 
 

BB: I feel the same as I did last year to be honest. It’s kind of like when something so crazy is happening that you literally can’t believe it.

All the performances and accomplishments have just felt like a dream and I guess it hasn’t really hit me yet.

brazzabelleI am very proud of where I  am right now but at the same time I still know there is a long road ahead of me and the journey has just begun so all these accomplishments just motivate me more and more to grow as an artist and work even harder.

JNTM: What can we expect for Brazzabelle going forward? Any new collaborations, tours, singles, mixes, remixes? 

BB: SO MUCH! Since I quit my day job the end of July I have been dedicating myself to producing full time.

My SoundCloud is filled to the brim with new material that is for the time being set to private but I am really excited to share all the new tracks with everyone.

I have several new original tracks coming up, some bootleg remixes for fun, and I have a remix for Crystal Fighters coming out on Big Beat Records in December.

JNTM: Just for fun, if you weren’t a producer, what would be your dream job? 

BB: I just quit my other dream job which was working in fashion merchandising. I loved it but am ready for a new challenge!
